This post represents an exciting opportunity for a qualified clinical or counselling psychologist who would like to develop expertise and experience in an acute hospital service setting. This is a new post that involves working in the Liaison Psychiatry Service at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital both on inpatient and outpatient basis. The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic and supportive Liaison Psychiatry Service within the Trust. The aim of the post is to provide a qualified clinical psychology service to patients referred to the Liaison Psychiatry Service. This is to support and enhance the professional psychological care of patients within the service, providing highly specialist psychological screening and assessment.
Main duties of the job
You would be joining a supportive team of highly experienced psychologists (qualified and AP) who work for the Trust. There are opportunities to work with service users with a wide range of complex difficulties who present in crisis, and to join a strong MDT approach.
You would be part of the wider Acute Psychology Service. We are a dynamic and forward-thinking service where Psychologists are strongly placed to lead on service development and delivery across all elements of the care pathway. We have an established track record in service innovation and support a diverse range of clinical and academic interests with strong links to university programmes within the region. There is an internal CPD programme that you would have access to, as well as being embedded within the teams, the successful candidate would have the opportunity to join colleagues in specialist supervision groups, special interest groups and service development projects. Continuing professional development is supported and encouraged.

- Satisfactory completion of a Heath and Care Professions Council/British Psychological Society accredited post graduate professional training course in either clinical or counselling psychology. Qualify for registration for Heath and Care Professions Council as a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist. Eligibility for entry onto the Register of Chartered Psychologists. Considerable experience of of specialist psychological assessment and individual or group based treatments of clients with complex difficulties across adult secondary or tertiary care settings. Considerable experience of working with a variety of client groups of working age with wide ranging presenting problems that reflect the full spectrum of clinical complexity and severity. Well developed theoretical and practical knowledge of the field of psychological theory and practice and evidence based treatments consistent with postgraduate level professional training and further post qualification study, training and supervised experience. Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, including specialist clinical interviewing ,observational methods, complex psychometric testing. Skills in the formulation of problems from a psychological perspective and in the implementation of highly specialist psychological therapies, interventions and management techniques that are appropriate for use with complex presenting problems. Able to deliver established/evidenced based psychological therapy to fidelity. When communicating with patients, carers and colleagues, has the high level interpersonal skills necessary to obtain and convey highly complex, sensitive or contentious information in emotionally charged and extremely emotive settings, in a manner that addresses and overcomes psychological resistance, hostility, antagonism, and problems of motivation and engagement, as well as barriers to understanding arising from cognitive, cultural or linguistic factors. Skills in providing consultation and advice from a psychological perspective to members of other professional and non professional groups.
