SECURE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES, SECURE CARE AND OFFENDER HEALTH DIRECTORATE
We have several exciting opportunities to be an active member of our thriving psychological therapies community across Secure Care and Offender Health. You will be joining a large team of around 70 psychology staff within the directorate.
These posts are preceptorships which will allow you to develop over time to fully meet the requirements of the Band 8a role; ideally within a 2 year period. You will be supported in developing your expertise across a range of forensic delivery contexts.
The psychology provision across SCOH is multi-modal, flexibly using a wide range of therapeutic models and interventions. Ensuring the effectiveness of our interventions is important to us, therefore there are a range of supervision structures in place. Model specific group supervision is provided in addition to regular clinical and management supervision to support skills development and think about the challenges and rewards of working within a complex context.
We also encourage and support continuing professional development. Opportunities also exist for collaboration and professional development, including participation in research and academic activity, through links with local academic and training institutions.
Main duties of the job
We are recruiting to roles within the following services:
- Tamarind Centre: 89-bedded Men's Medium Secure Service
- Reaside: 92 bedded Men's In-patient Secure Service
- FIRST: MDT service supporting and males and females with complex mental health and forensic needs transitioning from secure hospitals into the community
- AFFIRM (Offender Personality Disorder Pathway services) working in a consultation role with the National Probation Service
- PROSPER: an enhanced Intensive Intervention and Risk Management Service (IIRMS) working with high risk offenders in a community support and treatment service. A partnership between NHS REACH OUT and National Probation Service
We welcome candidates with a passion for working with people with complex presentations, mental health difficulties and offending behaviour. The role will include both therapeutic work as well as risk assessment and management.

Essential
- Satisfactory completion of a British Psychological Society accredited Doctoral Level postgraduate professional training course in clinical/forensic psychology completion of which includes the study of models of psychopathology, psychometric and neuropsychological assessment, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
- Eligibility for entry onto the Register of Chartered Psychologists.
Desirable
- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
Experience
Essential
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and individual and group based treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including primary and secondary/ specialist care and inpatient/residential, outpatient and community team settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, including forensic contexts with clients of all ages across the lifespan and of wide-ranging presenting problems that reflect the full spectrum of clinical complexity and severity.
Desirable
- Experience of working within a multicultural framework.
- Experience of working therapeutically with 'difficult to treat' clients.

- Well developed theoretical and practical knowledge of the field of clinical psychology, consistent with doctoral level professional training and further post qualification study, training and supervised experience during a minimum of 18 to 24 months as a Specialist Clinical/Forensic Psychologist.
- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment commensurate with doctoral level training, including specialist clinical interviewing, behavioural observation, complex psychometric testing and specialist neuropsychological testing.
