Job summary

BSMHFT is one of the largest mental health Foundation Trusts in the country, providing mental health services to a culturally and socially-diverse population.

We are seeking to recruit a Specialty on a full-time basis, working within the National Deaf Mental Health Service based at the Barberry in Birmingham. It is one of only 3 such services across the UK directly commissioned by NHS England with a catchment area stretching from the North Sea Coast to South Wales. The service is designed for profoundly Deaf adults who are sign language users with a wide range of mental health problems and complex physical health and social needs.

Main duties of the job

The post holder would be based at the 12-bedded inpatient unit at the Barberry. They would be expected to work closely with an experienced and highly specialised multi-disciplinary team. The MDT includes Deaf professionals. Responsibilities will include initial and ongoing assessment of patients admitted to the ward and management of inpatients in conjunction with the MDT. There will also be some outpatient work. There will be opportunities for training in British Sign Language and Deaf Awareness. Encouragement will be given to take part in CPD, audit and teaching where appropriate.

About us

The post is based at Jasmine Suite (Inpatient ward) at The Barberry with some work also in the community. The hours are 9am to 5pm. There is no on-call commitment with this post.

Job responsibilities

  • The post-holder will be responsible for the care and treatment of Deaf adults suffering from mental disorders. This will include taking part in initial assessments, reviews and work within the MDT. It is expected that most responsibilities will be with the inpatient team although there will be some community and outpatient work which will be discussed with the successful applicant on appointment.
  • The post-holder will be expected to work closely within the multi-disciplinary team including nurses, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and British Sign Language interpreters. This includes working with Deaf staff.
  • The post-holder will attend weekly clinical team meetings and performing medical duties that are decisions of that meeting.
  • Compiling a patients history from a number of sources, and preparing case summaries and discharge summaries
  • Preparing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals and Managers Hearings and giving evidence
  • Liaising with other clinical teams within and outside the trust
  • Liaising with general practitioners and medical specialists with regards the physical health of the patients
  • Specialist assessments relevant to the service

  • Primary medical qualification, Medical Degree (MB ChB or equivalent).
  • Full GMC registration.
  • Completed training to CT3 or above.
  • Competent general medical and psychiatric skills in assessment, formulation and diagnosis.
  • Four years medical experience gained since obtaining primary medical qualification, two of which should be within Psychiatry.
  • Broad range of experience in a variety of mental health and learning disability services.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to clinical audit and quality improvement within multi-disciplinary team.
  • Shows evidence of taking part in clinical audit.
  • Experience and skills in teaching/ training.
  • Medicine Management.
  • Ability to work creatively within multi-disciplinary team.
  • Willingness to be involved in management of service.
  • Good communication skills with service users, carers and staff in different roles.
