Cross Bay Trainee Clinical Coder

Job summary

Join our dynamic Cross Bay Clinical Coding Team as a Trainee Clinical Coder in a full-time, permanent role with structured, on-the-job training toward Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) status.

You'll be responsible for accurately coding clinical activity across our three hospital sites--Furness General Hospital, Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Westmorland General Hospital. Your work will support vital service planning, performance monitoring, and financial accountability across the Trust.

Additional responsibilities include participation in mortality reviews, specialty training, coder mentoring, and promoting high-quality coded data.

We're looking for candidates with strong analytical skills, digital proficiency, and the ability to manage workload independently. A willingness to learn medical terminology and engage with staff at all levels is essential.

This role offers hybrid working, with full-time onsite training initially and potential for remote work post-assessment.

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in translating clinical information from patient records into standardized codes using national coding standards (ICD-10 and OPCS-4).

  • Work under supervision of experienced coders to ensure accurate and timely coding of diagnoses and procedures.

  • Participate in structured training programmes to build knowledge and develop coding competencies.

  • Contribute to maintaining high data quality, supporting clinical and operational decision-making.

  • Engage in regular assessments and feedback sessions to monitor progress and development.

  • Follow departmental policies and confidentiality guidelines, upholding patient privacy and data security.

  • Support wider coding team by attending team meetings and participating in audits or improvement initiatives as required.

About us

We operatefrom three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, andUlverstonCommunity Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies,daycase and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Experience

Essential

  • In-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology and daily use of medical terminology
  • Experience in working in a health care environment
  • Knowledge of the importance of Confidentiality, Data Protection Act and Caldicott
  • Knowledge and experience inputting data into the Trust's Lorenzo system

Desirable

  • Experience and knowledge of the standard operating procedures of other departments and clinical specialties within the Trust.
  • Experience in the use of the Trust's Electronic Patient Record (EpR) system

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum A level qualification or equivalent qualification or equivalent knowledge

Desirable

  • Qualification in a science or equivalent knowledge
  • Qualification in Medical Terminology (AMSPAR or equivalent)

Training

Essential

  • Availability to attend a Clinical Coding standards course, within 6 months of appointment
  • Willing to undergo intense training in the rules and conventions of Clinical coding

Desirable

  • Previously undertaken intensive training and attained a high level of competency from this training

Skills, ability and knowledge

Essential

  • Ability and skill to undertake the study required to gain the Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) exams by passing the National Clinical Coding qualification (UK) at the level of 90% for the Practical Exam and 60% for the Theory exam
  • Able to use Microsoft applications i.e. Teams, word, excel
  • Ability to work to a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues at different levels ie multi-disciplinary teams
