Hand Therapist (Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist)

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Hand Therapist (either Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist) to join the Hand Therapy Team in the East Lancashire, based primarily at the Royal Blackburn site with a requirement to travel to Burnley General Hospital for Clinics. You will be joining a department which is highly valued and respected regionally, throughout the Trust, and within the wider therapy services.

We seek an individual who is autonomous, forward thinking, and enthusiastic. The successful applicant must be able to undertake assessment of patients referred into the department with a diverse range of hands conditions. In addition, you will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and documentation skills plus prioritisation and delegation abilities. The service is committed to offering student placements.

A band 6 to 7 development post would be considered however experience in Hand Therapy is required.

Main duties of the job

The Hand Therapy Service receives referrals directly from a variety of sources including orthopaedic and fracture clinics in regard to the assessment and rehabilitation of hand/wrist injuries and disorders. Additionally, the Hand Therapy Service takes referrals for the provision of bespoke splinting and functional fracture braces only as part of multidisciplinary care.

Hand therapy specialist Occupational Therapists (OT) and Physiotherapists (PT) are autonomous independent practitioners who undertake biopsychosocial assessment in relation to injuries or disorders that affect the functioning of the hand. Therapy interventions and recommendations are provided on the basis of that assessment in order to maximise hand function in regard to the individual's occupational priorities and independent living. Where prior levels of functioning cannot be achieved due to chronic dysfunction and/or deformity a hand specialist OT/PT will provide appropriate intervention, education and recommendation to support the process of acceptance and adaptation leading to agreed and acceptable levels of physical, psychological and social functioning. The Occupational Therapist/Physiotherapist remains accountable for the intervention provided and its outcome.

Working within the multidisciplinary team for the Hand Therapy providing a high level of clinical expertise with regard to highly specialist assessment skills and interactions within a defined patient group.

Provide clinical leadership and intervention to a designated service area/pathway in the delivery of a highly effective, safe and personal service, ensuring the needs of individual patients/carers as described by agreed goals/outcome measures and within defined clinical pathways.

An active member of the leadership structure, the postholder will contribute toward the strategic operational and clinical development of the service.

Provide teaching and highly specialist support in the management of complex conditions, educating other healthcare professionals and wider stakeholders.

The service operating hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 4.30pm.

MAIN DUTIES

  1. To provide clinical leadership and highly specialised expertise to a defined patient group to ensure that pathways, standards, competencies, training and monitoring are in place for the designated team, using agreed clinical pathways.
  2. Undertake comprehensive assessments at a highly specialist level, set patient centred goals, create evidence-based treatment plans, monitor, and evaluate a designated caseload of patients.
  3. Interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical factors including physical, environmental, psychosocial, mental, and cultural aspects of the patients life. To provide advice and intervention to facilitate an optimum level of function.
  4. Formulate goals in partnership with the patient, clearly communicating your clinical reasoning to justify your recommendations and utilising most appropriate treatment / intervention for the patients needs.
  5. Responsible for the effective management of a complex caseload individually and within team, requiring allocation and reallocation of work on a daily basis to meet changing clinical priorities and adherence to quality and performance measures.
  6. Contribute to the wider multidisciplinary team to provide evidence-based expertise within your specialist area.
  7. Contribute to the creation and review of procedures, standards and guidance relating to clinical practice and monitor effectiveness.
