Job summary

We are seeking a motivated and dynamic Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our multi-disciplinary Chronic Pain Management Service.

A Clinical Nurse Specialist in Chronic Pain provides expert advice, information and support for patients, delivering a combination of both individual and group based interventions. We require someone who can work both autonomously and as part of a team, and demonstrates leadership, innovation and be self-motivated. The successful applicant will need to be flexible regarding hours worked.

The successful applicant will be expected to deputise for the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist, to participate in the operational management of the Chronic Pain Unit at BGH and assist in the Professional management and development of the Chronic Pain Nursing team. They will be involved in service development, audit and research and service evaluation. They must be able to demonstrate evidence of recent learning and examples of continued professional and clinical development.

Main duties of the job

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care and management of patients with Chronic Pain working in association with the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and other members of the Chronic Pain Service

  • Provide management and organisation of the chronic pain unit with responsibility for this specific group of patients

  • Participate in the education, development and line management of other staff members. Specific education to include completing recognised pain management training and to complete V300, Independent prescribing.

  • Develop skills to facilitate the ability to undertake clinical responsibility for this specific group of patients.

  • Service development of self and others.

  • Ensure appropriate information is given to the patients and/or relatives regarding the continuing plan of care and treatments ordered and assess the impact of such plans.

  • Responsible for promoting and development of open communication networks and collaboration with colleagues, other professionals and agencies working across several disciplines.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

  • Responsible for pursuing own professional development and undertaking appropriate clinical practice skills as appropriate whilst having an awareness of the requirements.

  • Participate in induction programmes for new members of staff within the chronic pain unit.

  • Expected to provide mentorship and perceptorship for newly appointed staff and junior staff.

  • To establish and maintain a regional and national network of contacts.

  • To keep up to date with annual mandatory training.

  • To discuss annually present performance and future developments with the CNS through a formal appraisal.

  • Act as a resource for other hospital and community staff providing advice, nursing expertise and specialist knowledge as required.
