Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Endoscopy team team at East Lancashire Hospitals Trusts as a Band 7 HPB Clinical Nurse Specialist for ERCP and EUS.

This post will be based at Royal Blackburn Hospital mainly and will be expected to provide clinical expertise and knowledge, demonstrating a reasonable understanding of the issues related to the identification, assessment, treatment and management of Pancreaticobiliary patients.

We are seeking highly motivated nurse with HPB knowledge , confident decision-making skills, excellent communicator, innovative and with a passion to always improve.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be competent in all HPB Endoscopic interventions including ERCP, EUS/FNA, Axios stent insertion and Spyglass procedures.

You will supervise members of the nursing team ensuring competency-based assessments are completed for all staff allocated to assist with HPB procedures.

The post holder will co-ordinate and organise the inpatient and outpatient referrals for ERCP and EUS providing nursing support, information and advice to patients and their families, relatives and carers.

The post holder will facilitate communication and act as liaison between the referrer, clinicians, ward staff and endoscopy unit staff. The individual will develop and maintain safe pathways for patients who require Endoscopy Procedures on GA/Deep Sedation lists ensuring that the patients have attended for pre-operative/anaesthetic assessment.

You must be a dynamic flexible individual with advanced IT, administrative and organizational skills should ideally have a minimum of two to three years' experience in HPB and endoscopy nursing and have shown a keen interest in developing your clinical skills and knowledge.

About us

The post holder will ensure patients and their carers fully understand the procedure for which they have been referred.

The post holder will review the referrals and assess the patients to determine suitability and priority against agreed protocols and criteria, booking the patients appropriately and in a timely manner and maintaining the Stent Register.

You will be expected to facilitate the safe efficient and optimal use of ERCP and EUS sessions.

The post holder is expected to provide nurse led consent for inpatients and outpatients where appropriate.

The post holder will record activity, outcomes, take part in clinical audit, evidence based practice and prepare reports in order to evaluate the role and service.

The post holder will be expected to participate fully in their personal development and review process in order to achieve the skills required to deliver the role effectively and efficiently.

Job description

Job responsibilities

To take the lead role in managing the ERCP and EUS referral waiting list for endoscopic examination following medically agreed protocols and criteria and also help in prioritising patients according to clinical needs in accordance with agreed protocols/criteria.

To be point of contact for ERCP and EUS referrals from inpatients , outpatients , GP practices , Emergency Department, medical and surgical wards/departments directly into the service .

To assess the patients (Inpatients and outpatients) suitability for the endoscopic procedure.

To identify those patients who can safely be discharged and return for their procedure as an outpatient and ensure any patient returning for an outpatient procedure leaves with a booked appointment and instructions regarding any preparation.

To assess plan and implement programmes of evidenced based care.

To ensure interventions are undertaken in line with best practice guidance.

Participate in and coordinate the Pancreatobiloary and ERCP MDT and action the outcome.

Participate in the clinical governance process, including adverse incident reporting/investigation , the management of complaints, as appropriate , and collect and collate data as required by the role in order to support internal and external professional and operational bodies.

Act as point of contact for all inpatients and those discharged to return as an outpatient.

To work with medical teams, ward staff and the endoscopy unit to ensure the patient is fully prepared both physically and mentally so that the procedure can take place without delay.

Monitor/evaluate outcomes of services and care in conjunction with the departmental manager.

Assist with the introduction of new ideas and practices.

Positively contribute to the development of nursing and healthcare services within areas of responsibility.

Carry out and fulfil all delegated responsibilities.

Promote and demonstrate innovative practice and implement changes, as required.

To lead the ERCP and EUS lists and procedures being carried out.

Train new members of staff in ERCP and EUS.

Draw on a diverse range of knowledge in their decision-making to determine evidence-based therapeutic interventions

To support in Pancreaticobiliary assessment clinics, assessing/triaging patients and directing them to the appropriate pathway, in line with developed protocols .
