Job summary

This is an exciting opportunity for a Physician Associate already based in general practise to develop and provide a specialist interest in breast surgery at the Burnley Breast unit.

Within the breast unit, the Physician Associate will join a friendly, high-achieving multidisciplinary breast surgery team working to maintain a high-standard breast service in East Lancashire. They will supplement their career as a generalist with the opportunity to gain specialist knowledge and skills in breast disease management. The PA will expand their breast experience with the peer-support of an experienced multidisciplinary team and a named supervisor to develop their knowledge and skills to be able to see patients under indirect supervision within the breast service. They will be responsible for delivery of the established mastalgia (breast pain) clinic pathway. The PA is expected to develop leadership and service development skills and implement new ways of working across Primary and Secondary Care. This will include leading an educational program that will support primary care colleagues to increase their confidence in managing breast disease and improve the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

In Primary care, the Physician Associate is supported by accountable GPs, and employed by the PCN independent to the ELHT role.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will assess and examine patients, initiate and interpret investigations and recommend appropriate management as well as present patients and plans to the team when appropriate. Under Consultant supervision, you will participate in clinical triage, theatres and clinics to assess and plan management for patients. You will work with and support other healthcare professionals within the clinical team.

You will provide expert assistance to multidisciplinary teams in the provision of high quality care to patients.

You will work under the direction of a supervising Consultant and mentor, working collaboratively with other members of the clinical team and working within the Trust's policies and clinical guidelines.

You will be expected to liaise with other professionals and specialties as required and complete necessary documentation relating to your patients. You will perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge, working within clinical environments.

You will become involved in all activities of the Directorate, including clinical governance, quality improvement projects, research and teaching.

You may also represent the Directorate at internal and external meetings as appropriate

Essential

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Physician Associate Studies (Accredite UK)
  • Basic Life Support
  • Registered on the Faculty of Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register
  • Passed and completed 1 year post graduate preceptorship
  • Current and valid certification or re-certification of the National Certifying Examinations for Physicians Associates (Royal College of Physicians)
  • Membership of the Faculty of Physician Associates (Royal College of Physicians)

Desirable

  • Genomic and Counselling skills for nurses and healthcare professionals (UWE) or equivalent genomics studies
  • Experience working as a Physician Associate in GP and breast surgery
