Job summary
East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust Urology Investigations Unit and Outpatients provides diagnostic and clinical support services to the local population, across two main sites which are Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital.
A vacancy has arisen for a Part Time registered nurse to work across sites within these units. Initially you will be based at Burnley but move across sites as is needed.
Main duties of the job
Duties will include assisting Doctors and Specialist Nurses in clinics, performing flow rates and bladder scanning, assisting with flexible cystoscopies, prostate biopsies, urodynamics, trial without catheter, catheterisation male and female and aftercare of procedures. Providing mentorship and training to junior members of staff.Acting as a co-coordinator on the arrival of patients to the department, answering the telephone , liaising with other services ie district nurses.Department hours are currently 8am-6 pm and is a 7 day service; predominantly Mon-Fri.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of an exceptional team of motivated, forward thinking and enthusiastic outpatient Urology nurses, working across both Burnley and Blackburn sites.
The hours are currently worked over five days but with potential for seven in the future; with flexibility in terms of hours and days worked as per service need.

Job responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of nursing care.
- Work under the guidance of clinical nurse specialists whilst providing support during the performing of procedures such as; flexible, cystoscopy, prostate biopsies.
- Carry out the decontamination process of cystoscopes ensuring adherence to infection control policy.
- Arrange appointments and provide the care of patients who attend for specialist treatments when appropriate competencies achieved, for example: trial without catheter, catheterisation.
- Instruction of patients on how to perform a flow rate test
- Perform bladder scans
- Teaching of intermittent self-catheterisation and/ or Urethral dilatation.
- Perform venepuncture.
- Perform male and female catheterisation.
- Perform suprapubic catheter changes.
- Perform urodynamic tests on patients following the attendance of training course and completion of competencies or assist clinicians perform the same. Make referrals for the appropriate follow up based on the outcome of the diagnostic test.
- Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues. Obtaining and giving information and explanations regarding procedures that are done in the departments.
- Intravesical instillations including chemotherapy.
- Participate in the preparation and cleaning of clinical areas and equipment.
- Ensure the safe removal of clinical waste and contaminated items including blood and bodily fluids.
- Maintain patient dignity at all times.
- Ensure correct handling, storage, maintenance and utilisation of drugs, equipment and supplies.
- Undertake daily checks of equipment and report any faults to relevant department or person.
- Send equipment for repair with appropriate documentation
- Follow policies and procedures, makes comments on proposals for change within own work area.
- Reports any incidents and near misses via the Datix system
- Assist in maintenance of stock levels of all clinical equipment and supplies and order as necessary.

- To provide and receive confidential and sensitive information
- To communicate to patients and relatives sensitive and complex condition related information, provide empathy, reassurance and information related to treatments and further condition management.
- To communicate effectively with wide range of people in a manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture and background and preferred ways of communication
- Communication skills required are persuasion, motivation, and explanation, gaining informed consent to be used with a wide variety of patients, including patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment, working within the legal framework
