Job responsibilities

The post holders will join a team of 14 doctors participating on the middle grade rota. All the doctors will be mainly based in Blackburn and will also have regular duties in the Childrens Minor Illness Unit at Burnley. You will have ward commitments which are managed using the Consultant Ward Week pattern covering both sites. There are also duties in the Childrens Observation and Assessment Units, emergency attendance to the Emergency Department and experience in outpatient clinics. There is a separate team covering Neonatology on the Burnley site.

Knowledge

Essential

• Knowledge of medical training & evidence of competence in relevant procedures
• Knowledge of education & training issues from completion of UK based Medical degree or a minimum of 12 months previous NHS experience
• Good communication skills with ability to motivate colleagues - both medical & non-medical
• Ability to work in a team
• Demonstrates professionalism in attitude & application

Desirable

• Awareness of national agenda in relation to medical education & training
• Involvement in management & administration
• Evidence of ability to lead & motivate a team

Qualifications

Essential

• MBBS or equivalent
• Full GMC Registration & Licence to Practice
• At least 24 months experience in Paediatrics
• Successful completion of ST2+ or equivalent training in Paediatrics so at the level of ST3(+) registrar (as a minimum)
• Satisfactory completion of previous posts providing professional training in General Paediatrics & Neonatology to the level required to start to or continue to undertake middle grade responsibilities appropriate to level

Desirable

• Full MRCPH qualification or success in at least 2 out of 3 MRCPCH written papers
• APLS or EPLS & NLS trained
• Evidence of publications in medical education journals
• Evidence of publications in peer reviewed medical journals

Further Training

Essential

• Experience & training in Child Protection to Level 3 standards or be able to demonstrate this before taking up the post

Desirable

• Teaching, Learning & Assessment training
• PG Cert in medical education or equivalent

Experience

Essential

• Practical experience in management of a wide range of conditions in General Paediatrics, Neonatal medicine & Child Protection
• Experience of working or delivering medical education
• Proven ability to utilise IT as administrative tool
• Experience of working with staff from different professional backgrounds
• Understanding of & performing audit - evidence of experience during general professional training

Desirable

• Extensive experience of working or delivering medical education
• Experience in Emergency Medicine & know how to start management of children presenting with critical illness
• Research experience
