Job summary

To operate as part of the consultant team in cellular pathology, screening and authorising negative and malignant diagnostic cytology reports for a range of exfoliative cytology samples including those from the urinary tract, respiratory tract and serous effusions including peritoneal washings, giving clinical management recommendations and participating in departmental peer reviews/internal consultations.

To be responsible for the initial gathering and review of material, as well as attendance at required multidisciplinary team meetings and participate in slide review before the meeting and to discuss feedback arising from the meeting.

To deputise for the lead in diagnostic cytopathology within cellular pathology and bring strategic direction, clinical and scientific expertise to the field of diagnostic cytology by assessing the scientific feasibility and departmental impact of any potential new developments in order to improve patient outcomes.

To partake in triage of diagnostic cytology specimens based on the specimen type received and clinical information provided as to the preparations, stains and cell blocks required as well as attend endobronchial ultrasound and other fine needle aspiration clinics and perform on site adequacy assessment as required in order to appropriately triage samples.

Main duties of the job

To judiciously apply expert knowledge, skills, experience and professional autonomy in diagnostic cytology in requesting ancillary testing including molecular biology analyses in order to achieve final diagnoses and aid in personalised treatment as appropriate on a range of exfoliative (and when appropriate - endobronchial ultrasound fine needle aspiration ) diagnostic cytology samples.

The post holder will be a member of the departmental senior management team, bringing clinical expertise and strategic direction to the field of diagnostic cytology. This will involve expanding and developing best practice, implementing clinical governance, NICE recommendations and delivering improved outcomes for the cellular pathology diagnostic cytology service.

To work with the Consultant Clinical Lead to ensure the quality of the analytical service is maintained to nationally accepted standards (UKAS or equivalent).

To work with the Consultant Clinical Lead to improve the quality and sustainability of all aspects of diagnostic cytopathology service in order to meet and improve cancer waiting times, and the facilitation of patient discussion at the relevant multidisciplinary team meetings in order that patient treatment pathways are enhanced.
