Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen; we are looking to recruit a Diabetes Specialist Podiatrist (Band 6 AFC) to join our Multidisciplinary Diabetes Foot Team (MDFT) within East Lancashire. The Trust as recently undertaken a redesign of its diabetes foot service across the health economy (ELHT and Blackburn with Darwin) which include both inpatients and outpatients, this offers you the chance to be part of a growing vibrant team.

The Multidisciplinary Diabetes Foot Team (MDFT) offers support to patients with diabetes foot disease across (ELHT) this includes working with Vascular and Orthopedic Surgeons, Microbiologist, Diabetes Specialist Nurse, Orthotics and Foot Protection Team.

You will be part of an effective Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) delivering excellent diabetes foot care across the health economy; your duties will include the assessment and management of diabetes foot.

We are a progressive unit and training opportunities are available to develop you as a specialist podiatrist and to extend your role in a supportive and committed environment.

You must be willing to develop skills in the assessment and management of diabetes foot, be forward thinking and highly motivated. You should be able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team and have excellent communication skills at all levels. You will have proven relevant experience and willing to undertake a qualification in Diabetes as required. This is part of a seven day service

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring a good working environment in which all patients and carers receive a high standard of care. This includes being responsible for diagnosis and treatment planning and where necessary requesting appropriate investigations/imaging and analysis/interpretation of results.

The role includes working in both acute and outpatient settings and will require excellent knowledge of referral pathways to members of the wider multidisciplinary foot team (MDFT). The successful candidate will be expected to be an active member of the MDFT and work closely with all members to ensure timely and appropriate care for patients. The post holder will adopt a highly visible, accessible and supportive approach to patients, relatives, carers and staff. It is expected that the successful candidate leads by example and will play a proactive role in quality and service improvement, working closely with the Senior Podiatrist. A particular focus is to reduce the number of amputations in the locality that are related to diabetes and long-term conditions.

Offer educational support to clinical and medical personnel in the management of the Diabetic Foot and Lower Limb and provide training and mentorship to Podiatrists to ensure appropriate level of knowledge and skills in Diabetes.

To supervise / train / mentor Podiatry staff and students and other health care professionals.

To be accessible during working hours via mobile phone and Hoot foot Line to provide specialist advice and support to clinical and medical personnel and answer queries regarding patient treatment.

To work autonomously e.g. single-handed without supervision within defined areas, demonstrating effective time and self-management. Staff are encouraged and expected to seek professional advice from colleagues as required.

Be accountable for the management of a caseload of high-risk patients

Work closely with members of the MDFT

Work flexibly, for example when required due to leave or sickness in colleagues.

To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation in line professional code of conduct.

To be able to balance patient related and professional demand

Provide education and support to ward teams for patients with at-risk feet.

Provide clinical leadership, advice and support on specialist area to other podiatrists in the department and other health professionals.

Work with colleagues on rotation and evaluate their performance and provide feedback to staff and team leaders.

Develop, audit, implement, monitor and evaluate protocols / guidelines and procedures for specialist area.

Continually review data appropriate to own area and use this information to identify areas for service improvement

To integrate primary and secondary care to allow delivery of effective and appropriate treatment through Diabetic integrated care pathway and procedures

Set high standards of clinical practice within area of expertise and encourage others to do likewise by continuous reflection, self-assessment, and improvement of own practice.

To attend all core skills training as required by the Trust and enusre that all core skills training is up to date
