The post is based at the Lancashire Women and Newborn Centre (LWNC) Level 3 NICU at Burnley where the post holder will become part of a team of 9 full time Neonatal Consultants.
This substantive post attracts a 10 PA job plan with 8.5 DCC and 1.5 core SPA sessions per week. Extra SPA for educational supervision, job planning and appraisal will be discussed at first job planning meeting 3 months within starting the job. The on-call rota is 1 in 9 with 1 in 9 weekends on call.
The post holders will normally work a 4-day week except for the 'hot week'

Burnley General Teaching Hospital is the site for the East Lancashire Women's and Newborn Centre and is the largest in-patient consultant led obstetric unit in the North West. There is also a midwife-led birthing unit off the Hospital site in Blackburn.

Job responsibilities
- The post holder will be expected to provide a patient centred service, respecting the privacy, dignity and choice of individual patients. They will be responsible, with Consultant Neonatal colleagues, for the provision of inpatient neonatal services within the East Lancashire Hospital Trust.
- The post holder will aim to deliver high quality neonatal care with the help of the existing Neonatal colleagues.
- The post holder will assist consultant colleagues in the continued development of a consultant led approach to Neonatal paediatrics
- The post holder will provide night and weekend cover for the Consultant rota. They will have a hot week, a HDU week, a special care week and a postnatal ward week on the Consultant rota. The post holder will participate in the consultant ward week system of care on the neonatal unit. During the Intensive care week, all fixed commitments are cancelled. As the hot week/HDU and special care consultant, they will undertake a daily ward round and will supervise the work of junior medical staff throughout the day.
- The post holder will share in administrative duties allocated by mutual agreement within the Directorate.

In particular, the post holders will be responsible for updating policies and guidelines for the neonatal unit along with colleagues, which should be reviewed annually.
- The post holder will be closely involved in clinical governance issues.
- The post holder will have responsibility for the training and supervision of junior medical staff who work with them. The post holders will devote time to this activity on a regular basis and will be named in the contracts of training grade doctors as a first point of contact for education supervision, appraisal and career advice. The post holders will be responsible for supervising the education of medical students attached to the department. The post holders will provide informal teaching for junior doctors preparing for MRCPCH, DCH and Child Health Surveillance Accreditation.
- The post holder will be expected to keep up to date with developments within the speciality of neonatal intensive care by attending appropriate conferences and study courses.
- The neonatal service is a recognised Centre for Higher Specialist Training in Neonatology.
- There are ample opportunities and facilities for research, which is supported locally through the Research and Development Committee. There is also active support from the Universities of Lancaster, Central Lancashire and Manchester, with which there are collaborative projects. The Neonatal Unit is an active collaborating centre and has been part of several important national multicentre studies (see above). The post holders will be expected to take part in multi-centre research studies in neonatal medicine.
