Job summary

East Lancashire Hospitals are looking to appoint a Senior Clinical Fellow in our busy friendly department of Anaesthesia at East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. This post will offer CT3 equivalent training.

East Lancashire Hospitals is a large hospital with 26 theatres across 2 main sites in Blackburn & Burnley. Secondary care anaesthetic services are provided for all major surgical specialties except Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery. Tertiary services include Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgery, Urology, Head and Neck and Vascular Surgery.

We have a busy Obstetric Unit with approximately 6500 deliveries per year. We also have a busy 32 bed critical care unit that cares for 1600 patients per year. We take medical and surgical emergency patients and postoperative elective patients requiring a higher level of care.

Whilst a non-training grade you will be considered as a trainee with appropriate teaching and educational supervision. This is a 12 month post in the first instanace with the option to extend depending on the needs of the department.

Main duties of the job

Anaesthesia support a wide variety of surgical specialties ranging from day case surgery at our Elective Centre to major cancer surgery. Our theatres are across both sites of Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital.

We have on-call rotas for Obstetrics, ITU (2 tier) and general emergencies. The obstetric on call has second on call resident senior middle grade anaesthetists and a non-resident Consultant, ITU has 2 trainees and an Intensive Care Consultant (2 at weekends) and the general rota is covered by a Consultant with separate Consultant cover for the emergency theatre and trauma at weekends. Initially you will be part of the obstetric on call rota but there will be opportunity for experience and development in Critical Care.

This post will enable successful applicants to top up stage 1 training of the new anaesthesia curriculum. This includes a 3 month block of intensive care training and Obstetric on call.

Fellows will also have an educational supervisor and be able to attend departmental teaching sessions, audit. Fellows will also be provided with help preparing for the primary FRCA if required.
