Job summary

We are delighted to offer a role for one Physicians Associate. The role will comprise of a six month post in Emergency Medicine and a six month post in Psychiatry.

Successful candidate will work in both disciplines under the supervision of a Consultant or senior medical staff being part of large multi-disciplinary teams. They will have the opportunity to assess acutely unwell patient and formulate management plans which you then discuss with senior colleagues. In EM you will assess both adult and paediatric patients with illness and injuries and work in the resuscitation area, majors and the urgent treatment centre.

In Psychiatry you will work on the ward assessing patients with acute mental health problems as well as addressing the physical health problems of the admitted patients. Both posts offer the opportunity to work as part of multidisciplinary teams with other advanced care practitioners, nursing and medical staff.

Main duties of the job

Joint role 6 months Psychiatry and 6 months Emergency Medicine.

Psychiatry:

Skills will be developed in conjunction with your capability and development under the supervision of a consultant psychiatrist. You will assess patients and undertake clinical examination presenting the patient to senior medical colleagues to formulate a management plan. You will attend multidisciplinary meetings to ensure holistic patient care. As part of this role you will increase your knowledge of the Human Rights Act, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act & DoLS. You will undertake safeguarding assessments and ensure high-quality care.

EM:

In EM you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team assessing adult and paediatric patients in majors, resus and the Urgent Treatment Centre. You will need to formulate management plans and start initial treatments, discussing the case with senior medical colleagues. You will liaise closely with colleagues from other specialties to ensure patients receive the best care.

You will have a Consultant Clinical Supervisor who will provide educational supervision and ensure completion of your yearly appraisal. Key Duties & Responsibilities

Your range of duties will be developed over the course of 12 months in conjunction with your capability and development. You will practice under the supervision of a consultant psychiatrist. You will:

  • Undertake clerking on admission of patients to the Assessment wards or contingency beds covering all aspects of relevant history including collateral history, mental state examination, risk assessments, clinical examination, order appropriate investigations and a working hypothesis to discuss with Supervisor or senior clinicians

  • Discuss with Supervisor or senior medical colleague the case summary, differential diagnoses, investigations, risk assessment and be guided by them in formulating the management plan

  • Actively contribute to the multi-disciplinary team meetings, safety huddles, work with the supervisor, ward manager to ensure comprehensive assessments are undertaken and a holistic approach is adapted in the management of patients

  • Work collaboratively with the ward junior Doctors in the clinical care of patients, perform delegated tasks, follow up and interpret laboratory and radiological results and initiate appropriate patient management or seek advice from medical colleagues

  • Respond to patients changing health status and undertake appropriate actions

  • Gain knowledge and competencies on relevant legislations including Human Rights Act, Mental Capacity Act, Mental Health Act, DoLS, and ensure patients rights are respected

  • Maintain timely and appropriate documentation on Trust electronic patient records/alternatives if this is not in place

  • Registered on the Faculty of Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Body
  • Current and valid certification or re-certification of the National Certifying Examinations for Physicians Associates (Royal College of Physicians)
  • Passed and completed 1 year post graduate preceptorship
  • Membership of the Faculty of Physician Associates (Royal College of Physicians)
