Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust

Navigator for the Faster Diagnostic Standard (RDS)

Information:

This job is now closed

Job summary

The Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) is a key part of the NHS's long term plan for cancer care.

FDS has been introduced to ensure patients who are referred for suspected cancer receive a timely diagnosis.

Navigators co-ordinate all aspects of the RDS pathway, both face to face and virtually: organising appointments, acting as a support and information role for others within the service.

The Faster Diagnosis Standard will:

  • reduce the time between referral and diagnosis of cancer
  • reduce anxiety for patients, who will receive a diagnosis or an 'all clear' but do not currently receive this message in a timely manner
  • work alongside the delivery of the 62-day referral to treatment cancer waiting times standard, including the standard to reduce waiting times, through improved analysis and pathway improvements of faster diagnosis
  • contribute towards the NHS Long Term Plan commitments for earlier diagnosis, including that, by 2028, 55,000 more people each year will survive their cancer for five years or more, and 75% of people with cancer will be diagnosed at an early stage (stage one or two).

Main duties of the job

  • The role of the RDS Navigator is integral to the individual cancer teams developing and monitoring the pathways of care for their group of patients. The post holder will have a pivotal role in enabling the Trust and individual cancer teams to deliver a high standard of care and communication throughout the pathway. Effective tracking of the pathways will also facilitate the Trust in achieving National Cancer Waiting Times Standards, National Cancer Peer Review Measures, and other Cancer performance and data collection targets
  • The post holder will be responsible for the organisation and tracking of a defined group of patients across all departments to which they may transverse (radiology, pathology etc). These patients may need to be identified from other sources and tracked. The post holder will also provide day to day intelligence about progress against Patient Tracking List (PTL) plans, troubleshooting blockages in patient June 2021 pathway and providing proactive information in anticipation of potential problems, actively escalating as necessary.
  • The post holder is responsible for ensuring accurate information is electronically stored in a timely and co-ordinated manner, including collection of data for audits.
  • The post holder will work unsupervised for most of the time but will be supported as necessary by core members of the RDS and Cancer Services Teams.
