Job summary

The post holder will provide dynamic senior patient safety leadership, providing expert support to the organisation. With direct access to senior clinical leadership and reporting to the Deputy Chief Nurse for Quality and Safety, the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) for Quality and Patient Safety will facilitate the early escalation of patient safety and clinicalgovernance issues or concerns.

The post will also play a key role in the development of a patient safety culture, safety systems and patient safety and quality improvement activity. You will have line management responsibility of the patient safety and clinical governance team, support the development of a patient safety culture and the Trust safety systems, support implementation of the quality governance framework and have sufficient seniority to engage directly with members of the executive team.

Main duties of the job

Ensuring the Trust has effective systems for the planning and coordinating of actions required by National Patient Safety Alerts.

Line management of the patient safety and clinical governance team andensuring quality governance framework and strategy are embedded andimplemented within divisions/care groups including implementation of thePSIRF, development and implementation of the Trust PSI response plan(PSIRP) and policy.

Lead on the development of a robust patient safety culture, safety systems,and activities aimed at enhancing patient safety and overall quality.

Collaborate with external networks to exchange best practices and promote a culture of continuous learning, ensuring that insights are shared and integrated into our safety systems.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential

  • Educated to MSc in patient safety / safety science or equivalent significant experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of healthcare regulations, standards, and accreditation bodies
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in healthcare leadership, with a proven track record in patient safety, clinical governance, or quality improvement
  • Risk management related qualification
  • A strong commitment to continuing professional development
  • Experience of the safety system (DATIX)

Desirable

  • Clinical Qualification and Professional Registration e.g. NMC, HCPC is desirable

Experience

Essential

  • Comprehensive expert in patient safety investigations and safety science
  • Experience of facilitating change, including ability to motivate staff and change behaviours and attitudes
  • Expert working knowledge of the 2015 NHS Patient Safety Framework / 2023 Patient Safety Incident Framework (PSIRF)
  • Experience of presenting reports to committees and boards
  • Experience of theming and presenting data sets - ideally linked to patient safety
  • Experience in NHS leadership role (band 8a within quality governance / patient safety role)
