Applications are invited for a full-time Perioperative Medicine Fellow in the Department of Anaesthesia at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.This post is to start on 07.08.2024 for a 12 month Fixed Term Contract.This is an exciting opportunity to join an expanding and dynamic ACSA-accredited anaesthetic department in a role designed to develop skills in all aspects of Perioperative Medicine. The post is for experienced doctors who have made a career commitment to Anaesthetics and who have a strong interest in Perioperative Medicine including Prehabilitation, Preoperative assessment, and Improving Surgical Outcomes. The Fellowship includes a minimum two half-day session per week of dedicated time for Perioperative Clinical work. This fellowship can support training in all aspects of Perioperative Pathways including Prehabilitation, Digital Innovation, Primary and Secondary Care Liaison, Shared Decision Making/ High Risk Preoperative Clinics, and Enhanced Recovery Pathways.

There are opportunities for the post holder to work towards CPET Accreditation in our POETTS accredited department. The successful fellow will be expected to participate in, or lead, QIP's including but not limited to PQIP and GIRFT targets, or other aspects of Perioperative outcomes which can be tailored to the post holder's interests.We anticipate this vacancy to be a popular post and may close before the advertised end date therefore early applications are encouraged.

Main duties of the job

The Fellow will participate in anaesthetic clinical duties on the Stoke Mandeville Hospital (SMH) and Wycombe Hospital (WGH) sites. This will generally include participation in the full shift, middle tier, out-of-hours Anaesthetic rotas which include include theatre, obstetric anaesthesia and/or ICM out of hours rotas.The successful candidate will be expected to display a high degree of self-motivation, professionalism and integrity and should be able to provide anaesthesia to a high degree of skill commensurate with a speciality trainee. They would work clinically under the day-to-day supervision of the Anaesthetic Consultants.The whole department holds regular teaching sessions, in-situ simulation sessions, MDT meetings, clinical governance meetings, journal club and other activities supporting clinical care and training. Successful candidates can continue with preparation for the FRCA examination if necessary. There is a rich audit and quality improvement program, and the department is participating in a number of NIHR-portfolio research studies. The Fellow will be encouraged and supported to be involved in these additional activities.The Fellow will be expected to contribute to the teaching and supervision of less experienced colleagues and run the teaching programme for the Preoperative assessment nursing team.

Maintaining full ALS certification is a mandatory requirement for the post.The post can support Anaesthetic trainees, in any stage of Anaesthetic training, from a minimum of 2 years Core training subject to prospective approval from local TPD, or as a post-CCT fellowship.

Daily Commitment:The Fellow will assist with the provision of the clinical anaesthetic services for elective and emergency surgical procedures, related investigations, and other procedures requiring general anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, or sedation.

The post holder will be on-call for either obstetric anaesthesia, ICM or the emergency list in theatres in accordance with full shift rotas published each week in advance approximating to a 1:10 with prospective cover. 1:10 for long days (8am 9pm) and 1:10 for night duties (8pm 9am). Supervision, assistance or advice appropriate to the candidates level of experience is available at all times.
