Job summary

This post will contribute to an international multi-centre research study funded by National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR). Supervision provided by the UK Principal Investigator, Dr Jane Duff, and work will be alongside other members of the psychology team at the National Spinal Injuries Centre. We have a demonstrated commitment to research, publishing over 150 papers, and our internationally respected team is part of a thriving Trust Psychological Service with 11 other clinical services. The grant involves qualitative and quantitative methodologies, the role will also include delivery of other associated research on rehabilitation outcome and length of stay. Phase 1 involves facilitating 3 focus groups for people with spinal cord injury (SCI), their support partners; and healthcare clinicians; phase 2 piloting a survey developed in phase 1, phase 3 recruitment of n500 for survey. Applicants should possess a good degree in Psychology. Post graduate experience in undertaking clinical and the mixed methods research and an operational knowledge of Excel, SPSS and statistics is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver the research protocol, data analysis, literature reviews and any associated publications of the NIDILLRR grant.
  • Contribute to the ongoing research of the Department, such as routine data collection regarding rehabilitation outcome.
  • To gain a clinical understanding of spinal cord injury rehabilitation and outcome through being a keyworker and supporting the delivery of the internationally renowned Stoke Mandeville Spinal Needs Assessment and Goal Planning Programme.
  • To provide support, under the supervision of the NSIC Head of Clinical Psychology, to trainees and students on placement at the Department or undergraduates doing work experience.

Essential

  • A first degree, upper-second class, in Psychology and able to demonstrate relevant experience commensurate with this post
  • Computer literacy and working experience of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of and proven use of statistical packages such as Excel, SPSS, and R

Desirable

  • Evidence of recent GCP training

Knowledge and skills

  • Understanding of ethical and legal requirements of clinical trials
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate clearly with multi-disciplinary team, patients, and members of the community
  • An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with psychological and physical problems
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of team to ensure cross cover of all aspects of work
