Job summary
The Urology team at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust are excited to offer a new opportunity for an experienced senior nurse with either Urology or Oncology background to join our friendly department.
This role involves supporting and co-ordinating the care of patients during the diagnostic part of the cancer pathway for a suspected urological cancer.
This includes providing specialist knowledge, advice, support, information and education to patients. This is a new role and will require someone who is enthusiastic and keen to make a difference to patient care. The role will require the applicant to work independently but also closely with the Urology ANP to provide timely patient assessment at the point of referral working on a "straight to test" model. This will reduce the waiting times for the patient to be diagnosed and treated and will reduce the number of visits to the hospital thereby improving the patient experience.
There is a need for close liaison with the Consultants, Specialist Registrars, Nursing staff in the Urology Investigation Unit, outpatients, pharmacy, members of the MDT and Primary Care Team to expedite and facilitate patient-centred care for Urology Cancer patients.
Main duties of the job
- Triage of haematuria and prostate referrals from eRS (electronic referral system) based on the local protocol and evidence-based knowledge.
- Taking active role in developing and troubleshooting the pathway.
- Running nurse-led clinics for the specific pathway (telephone or F2F).
- Ordering necessary blood test, radiological tests and investigations.
- Actioning acceptable referrals and re-referring to GP when indicated.
- Communicating diagnosis, scan findings and results to the patients.
- To provide a safety-net advice to the patients.
- To be the first of contact for patients on the cancer pathway.
- History taking and assessment of patients (once competent).
- Interpretation of diagnostic tests (once competent).
- To support flexible cystoscopy clinics or to run them (once competent).
- To support prostate biopsies clinics or to run them (once competent).
- Performing flow rates on patient that attend F2F clinics.
- Organising surgical interventions when required.
- Referring to the other specialities when necessary.
- Formulating clinical letters to patients.
- Attending MDT meetings.
- Close liaison with clinical and non-clinical colleagues, especially the FD navigators.
- To support other Urology Investigations Unit (UIU) nurse-led clinics when needed and appropriate.
- To support territorial referrals or territorial investigations such as PET PSMA
- To lease with the shared care navigators and cancer services.
