Job summary

This role is to support specialist cancer nursing services at Buckinghamshire Hospital NHS Trust (BHT). The role will consist of providing specialist urology and oncology knowledge to patients and to act as an important member of the multi-professional team, providing a service to patients with urological cancer and their carers, from the time of investigation with a suspicion of cancer, to diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance throughout the course of their disease.

The rightful candidate will promote flexible working, adjusting their practice to the service and patient needs. The successful applicant will facilitate patients journey within uro-oncology services, making sure that the care is delivered safely and appropriately

Main duties of the job

  • To work as part of the Uro-Oncology CNS team in the management of patients with urological cancers supporting them and their families throughout their cancer journey.
  • To take part in clinical duties such as removal of catheter following Radical Prostatectomy and administration of Intravesical Chemo/Immunotherapy. Appropriate training will be provided.
  • To be involved in the established nurse-led results clinic for patients following prostate, bladder biopsies and radical surgery. Ensuring patients are discussed at the Urology MDT meeting to establish their treatment plan. This will include receiving and providing patients and their families with highly distressing, sensitive and complex information, using developed empathy, reassurance and counselling skills.
  • To provide specialised clinical advice for urological cancer patients and ensure all clinical practice is evidence-based, drawing on published literature and policy guidelines.
  • To provide telephone advice and assessment as required.
  • To promote liaison between the Trust and the Primary Care Team.
  • To actively take part in Holistic Needs Assessments, which explores and provides additional support to patients and their carers through the cancer journey. Appropriate training will be given.
  • To participate in nurse-led clinics and to work alongside the urology consultants, to provide a designated specialist service to patients.
  • To actively participate as an integral part of the Urology weekly and specialist MDT
