Job summary

We have an opportunity for a Biomedical Scientist band 5 position in the Cellular Pathology team at Buckinghamshire HealthCare Trust, Wycombe Hospital site.We require a conscientious and enthusiastic individual to join our friendly laboratory team in providing Cellular Pathology services. Working in different areas the department on a rota basis giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your skills whilst learning one too.,The duties will be varied and vital to the successful working of the department. Training in all aspects of the role will be given as required.Attention to detail is paramount to this post.. The ability to adapt to any changes within the role is desirable.

Duties will include, working alongside team staff members:

Use of the Pathology computer system [Winpath],

Mani laboratory duties-

assisting at cut-up,

Participating in Immunocytochemistry

Participating in Molecular Techniques [OSNA]

Preparing slides for the Digital Pathology imaging.

Main duties of the job

  • Take part in laboratory rota as required - cut up, immunocytochemistry (ICC), immunofluorescence (IMF), OSNA, special stains, main lab, throw out and Digital Pathology.
  • Ensure all records are kept up to date and any non-conformities identified are recorded.
  • Take part in monitoring: temperature of ovens, refrigerators, freezers, wax baths and water baths as required, air-flow levels, balance checks, levels of Formaldehyde and Xylene, reporting any anomalies to senior members of staff.
  • Assist in the audit process as directed
  • Ensure there are adequate stocks of chemicals, reagents and consumables.
  • Assist in the training and supervision of work experience students, new BMS staff and Medical Laboratory Assistants
  • Use microtome to cut sections of 3 microns thickness from the prepared paraffin blocks, including large blocks. Float sections onto water bath, pick up sections onto slide and label slide with correct cassette number. The correct type of slide must be used for the ensuing procedures. Be able to recognise poor quality sections and rectify any faults where necessary.
