Job summary

Rheum Buckinghamshire Healthcare is based at Stoke Mandeville and Amersham Hospitals, with clinics also being held at Wycombe Hospital. The department currently has 4 consultants. Dr Magliano leads an Osteoporosis Service, Dr Narshi is the Early Arthritis lead and Dr Chana leads the development of the Vasculitis pathway. The department has an ultrasound machine at the Stoke Mandeville site which supports Early Arthritis clinics and funding agreed for a portable machine for the peripheral sites. The department has 7 specialist nurses who run nurse led clinics, a rheumatology helpline and infusion service from a day case unit at Stoke Mandeville. The department currently has 1 Rheumatology specialty trainee, 1 IMT3 trainee, 1 IMT year 2 trainee, an Advanced Clinical Nurse Practitioner in training and 1 GPVTS trainee shared with Dermatology. There is also a specialist ankylosing spondylitis clinic run by a senior physiotherapist and a monthly combined hand clinic with plastic surgeons. A specialty pharmacist runs a treat-to-target gout clinic.

Main duties of the job

The Rheumatology clinics include General Clinics, Early Arthritis Clinics (with access to MSK ultrasound), and Telephone Clinics. The traditional clinic template includes 2 x 30 min new appointments, 3x 20 min urgent follow up and 4x 15 min routine follow up. Current templates are subject to change in line with IPC guidance and Covid recovery plans.

Rheumatologist of the Week (ROW

The ROW rota (currently 1:4) includes providing an in-reach service for inpatients with registrar support (2-3 referrals per week), and referrals triage/advice and guidance on ERS (50 referrals per week). All remaining rheumatology consultants will continue to see inpatient referrals.

We provide inpatient facilities from two acute and five community hospitals in the county, and care closer to home from 20-plus venues such as health and leisure centres and GP practices. Our community health services include adult community healthcare teams (district nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy), services for children and families, intermediate care, health visitors, community dental services and palliative care.
