Job summary

To ensure a quality system is operational and fundamental for Blood Sciences (Biochemistry/Haematology).

To participate in the formulation of operational policies in association with the Blood Sciences Management Team

To be responsible for providing accurate workload statistics and performance indicators within agreed protocols and providing regular reports for the Pathology and Laboratory Managers. To assist the Pathology Manager and the Pathology Management Team in developing the Departments Annual Management Review.

To represent the Pathology Department at meetings as directed.

To be the main contact for the UKAS

To establish and maintain effective working relationships with service users.

To lead the quality team for Blood Sciences (Biochemistry/Haematology).

To ensure the Quality Manual is up to date and regularly reviewed.

To lead on quality for the Blood Sciences, (Biochemistry/Haematology) services In Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.

Please Note: A Band 6 suitable candidate will be considered for the role for the opportunity to gain valuable work experience.

Main duties of the job

To maintain an effective quality management system for the department.

To ensure that all analytical processes are adequately supported with the necessary Internal and External quality assurance measures, with support for turnaround time expectations.

To ensure that an effective document control system is in place and operational. This must include the 'Quality Manual', all procedures and records that relate to quality in the Blood Sciences department.

To maintain the Pathology Department Quality Manual.

To ensure that all Laboratory/Trust policies are in place in all areas of Blood Sciences updated as required and adhered to.

To ensure that all Laboratory/Trust Protocols are in place in all areas of Blood Sciences and adhered to.

In co-operation with the Laboratory Management team provide guidance, advice and focus for all issues relating to quality within the Blood Sciences Laboratories.

Oversee the implementation, development and co-ordination of all quality processes within the Blood Sciences Laboratories.

To ensure that adherence to all relevant professional standards and guidelines is maintained.

To take an active role in clinical governance issues and ensure that the department conforms to national evidence based standards

Essential

  • Graduate within a life science subject
  • MSc in one discipline of Blood Sciences
  • Member of Institute of Biomedical Science

Desirable

  • (Higher) Certificate in Quality Management

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Worked within a Blood Science discipline at a BMS band 6 level for at least 5 years
  • Performed and evaluated Audits

Desirable

  • Peer UKAS inspector

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential

  • Working knowledge of all disciplines of Blood Sciences, including Phlebotomy.
  • Good I.T. & Keyboard skills
  • Experience with risk assessment techniques
  • Ability to write clear reports and develop quality projects.
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels.
  • Evidence of setting targets professional/personal and following to completion
  • Diplomatic and assertive
  • Good communicator.
  • Able to take the lead role but also with good strengths in a team situation.
  • Able to communicate at the most senior levels, imparting controversial and highly complex information.

  • Knowledge of Quality Management software packages.
