Job summary

A fantastic opportunity has arisen within the trust corporate Patient Safety & Litigation Team for the position of Litigation Officer.

The post supports the Litigation Manager in the handling of clinical, non clinical negligence claims and inquests.

Leadership skills, an ability to motivate others is essential. Excellent communication skills, the role demands a high level of interface with all grades and professions, in addition to external engagement. Maintain a thoroughly professional demeanour being comfortable switching between informal and very formal modes of communication.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong organisational and communication skills with a confident and polite telephone manner and will have the ability to effectively prioritise their workload. A good working knowledge of Microsoft Office is essential, as is having a high standard of accuracy, presentation and good literacy skills.

The job enables agile working and the team mainly work from home. The successful candidate will be expected to work on site during their period of induction and training.

Main duties of the job

  • Including reporting new clinical and non clinical claims to the NHS Resolution.
  • Attending meetings with Trust solicitors relating to claims
  • Handling inquests and liaising with the Coroner's Officer
  • Requesting and providing statements to assist the Coroner
  • Attending Pre Inquest meetings with staff, trust solicitors and /or Kings Counsel
  • Acts as administrator for claims and inquests on the Datix Database.
  • Inputs and maintains accurate data on claims and inquests on the Datix database and makes sure the database is up to date.

Education, Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Holds a Degree/Capsticks Diploma (or working towards) in Clinical Risk and Claims Management
  • Evidence of working in the specialist area of NHS Litigation
  • Evidence of knowledge of medical terminology

Eperience

Essential

  • Experience working within the healthcare profession mostly within a complex NHS environment
  • Subject matter expertise in claims handling
  • Subject matter expertise of the Coroner's Service and involvement with the inquest procedure
  • Experience of working to tight and demanding deadlines with ability to prioritise

Skills, Abilities and Knowledge

Essential

  • Able to communicate complex and sensitive issues to internal staff at all levels confidently, both verbally and written
  • Able to communicate with external partners including HM Coroners and Coroners offices, and solicitors (and clients, for example in mediation) on complex and sensitive issues confidently, both verbally and written
  • Competent computer user eg must be familiar with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Datix with good keyboard skills and data entry
  • Excellent record keeping and attention to detail
  • Excellent time management and the ability to work under pressure to deadlines and prioritise work
  • Interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with bereaved families sensitively
  • Ability to interpret, analyse data for corporate and external reports
  • Able to read and assimilate complex medical records information using good analytical skills
  • Self motivated, enthusiastic, with a positive approach. Ability to use own initiative and work with some degree of autonomy
  • Understanding of data protection, patient confidentiality and equality and diversity.
