Job summary
Nursing Associates support the provision of holistic, person-centred care and support for people of all ages, across the lifespan and in a variety of settings. The nursing associate works independently - within the remit of the role - to assess, plan, implement and evaluate; undertaking aspects of care delegated by registered nurses and registered allied health professionals.
A theatre nursing associate will use personal clinical effectiveness and knowledge to contribute to the delivery of high quality, cost effective care under the supervision of the band 5 and 6 theatre scrub nurses. The post holder is responsible for the peri-operative care needs of patients prior to theatre and during theatre will act as a scrub practitioner or circulator. The nursing associate is under the direct management of a Registered Practitioner within Amersham skin cancer service. The post holder will act as a member of the theatre team carrying out all relevant forms of care relating to the peri-operative patients, implementing and providing high standards of individualised care and contribute to the assessment of their care needs. In conjunction with the nurses, ACPs and doctors, the post holder is responsible for maintaining an environment that is conducive to the delivery of a high standard of care.
Main duties of the job
- Deliver a high standard of patient care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient ensuring that procedures and treatments are carried out in accordance with Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Recognised respect and support the dignity of patients at all times.
- Maintain professional record keeping, which is accurate and in line with professional codes, services standards and team specific requirements.
- Undertake and escalate NEWS scores on patients whose scores have changed.
- Organise the day-to-day work of any given theatre under the supervision and guidance of the nursing lead, as applicable to level of competence and skill
- Once competencies have been completed to assist in scrubbing for theatre procedures
- Communicate effectively with all colleagues including medical staff, departments and senior nursing staff as appropriate to maintain the smooth running of services.
- Assist in maintaining the cleanliness of the department pre and post theatre procedures and take measures to prevent cross infection, liaising/reporting to the Theatre Team Leader or Infection control Key Person as appropriate.
- Report any untoward incidents occurring in the department and escalate to Theatre Team Leader.
- Participate as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the implementation and encouragement of Risk Management and Clinical Governance.
