Job summary

  • To work as part of the Newborn Hearing Screening team, screening all babies as early as possible either in hospital or as an outpatient.
  • To liaise with the Newborn Hearing Screening Local Manager, parents and other professionals in order to provide a seamless service.
  • To collate and accurately record test data both manually and electronically.

Main duties of the job

Newborn Hearing Screener.

The Newborn Hearing Screening Department (NHSP) aims to screen the hearing of all babies within the first few weeks of life. No formal qualifications are required but applicants must have a good general standard of education with a minimum GCSE Maths and English or equivalent. Good interpersonal skills and manual dexterity are also essential. The role involves working with a multi-disciplinary team who are responsible for the care and management of the newborn population across Buckinghamshire. All necessary training will be given.

The service is based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, but applicants will be required to travel to outside clinics as needed. The service runs 365 days a year so applicants must be willing to work Weekends and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis.

Essential

  • Good general standard of education. Minimum GCSE level A*- C in English and Maths plus 3 other subjects or equivalent
  • Must be willing to undertake the level 3 Diploma in Health Screening where applicable

Desirable

  • Knowledge of the Auditory System

EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Previous experience of working with babies.

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

  • Competent IT skills with knowledge of word, excel and sound use of using the internet and web pages
  • Able to work as an effective member team member
  • Ability to communicate in English clearly and concisely with patients, carers and the multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to work carefully and accurately
  • Willing to adhere to protocols and guidelines
  • Awareness of own limitation
  • Knowledge of hearing issues in children
  • Aware of barriers to communication
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of the current legislation and national guidance relating to the new born hearing screening programme
  • Understanding of the safeguarding processes and child protection procedures
