Job summary

We are looking for a flexible, hardworking, and committed Senior Healthcare Assistant to join our enthusiastic team within the NSIC which cares for a variety of patients of all ages. Each day will provide new and exciting challenges for staff.

The National Spinal Injuries Centre is a world-renowned specialist National Centre for people with Spinal Cord Injury - a Centre that's life-changing for everyone who comes into contact with it and the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.

The successful candidate will essentially be tidy, punctual, and well organised, able to demonstrate some initiative and predominantly a caring attitude.

Most important is that you always strive to provide a high standard of care. Your philosophy should be that the patient always comes first.

The department is open Monday - Friday 8.30am - 6.00pm.

The position requires individuals with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work under pressure, whilst delivering a high standard of care to our patients. Teamwork is encouraged and you will work alongside qualified nurses in the delivery of care.

Our philosophy in the NSIC is to support lifelong care. As a member of the outpatient team, you will come into contact with patients who live in the community and have become "the expert patient".

Main duties of the job

  • Communicate with patients and those accompanying them in order to promote their comfort, safety, and wellbeing. Be aware of barriers to effective communication which may be evident such as cognitive, expressive, and receptive impairment, embarrassment, anxiety, pain, fear, visual/hearing impairment and to seek guidance of aqualified nurse or therapist to implement strategies to overcome these.
  • Support families/carers as directed by the Registered Nurse and multidisciplinary team.
  • Effectively communicate with other members of the organisation and respond appropriately in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Assist with the admission, safe transfer, and discharge of the patient within the outpatient department.
  • Enable and assist the patient with dressing /undressing as directed for assessment within the outpatient department.
  • Enable and assist the patient to attend to their hygiene / personal care and grooming needs appropriate to their ability and condition, if required within the outpatient department
  • Support/assist patient to adhere to appropriate hand hygiene and infection control guidelines.
  • Comply with the Trust Moving and Handling policy
