Job summary

An exciting opportunity for a Deputy General Manager position has become available within the Emergency Department at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

We are seeking to recruit a dynamic, ambitious, and talented individual to this post. You will have line management, budgetary and performance responsibilities. You will lead on service improvement projects to raise quality and drive productivity while maintaining operational delivery. Outstanding communication and organisational skills are essential. Experience in working within an Emergency Department service will be beneficial. This is a challenging and fast paced operational role but represents an exciting opportunity for the right candidate. The role represents an ideal opportunity for the post holder to further their skills and progress their career into a senior management role.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy General Manager in (ED) is a key role within the Medicine Operational Management Team. The postholder will be responsible for the delivery of activity and finance targets and to develop and implement plans for service developments in line with Trust and Commissioner requirements for Emergency Medicine.

The Deputy General Manager will support the General Manager and will work in partnership with the Service Delivery Unit (SDU) Lead and Lead Clinicians to define a service strategy and to deliver the operational plan and deliver key performance targets, in line with local and national arrangements.

Ensure appropriate risk management processes are in place to deliver a safe, high quality, financially efficient patient centred service.

Provide cross-trust liaison, ongoing support and managerial direction to staff in response to internal and external pressures that may affect throughput/ flow of patients and provide operational leadership and work as part of the operational team to cross cover where required.

The post holder will support the Business Planning for the Emergency Medicine and will line manage the Business Manager and Office Manager.

  • Experience of managing administrative and support staff in a team setting Experience of working with staff in a diversity of roles (i.e. admin, clerical, technical, clinical)
  • Robust, with experience of being able to balance competing priorities and meet personal and directorate targets within a fluctuating and demanding workload
  • Ability to co-ordinate and manage complaints, including experience of dealing with distressed patients/relatives/staff

  • Previous experience of managing multiple budgets
