Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics based at Colchester Hospital.
The successful post-holder will participate in elective operating sessions and a three tier 1 in 8 rota covering main theatres, critical care and maternity to provide 24-hour care.Our specialty doctors are expected to participate in at least two of these three clinical areas for their on-call duties.
Areas of special interest may be accommodated and will depend on previous clinical experience and seniority. We would also support any doctor in their preparation, if they wished to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR)
Main duties of the job
The post-holder will:
- Provide safe anaesthesia to a wide range of surgical specialties, under the direct or more distant supervision of a consultant. Two consultants are present on site until 2200 hrs Monday to Friday for critical care and general/maternity emergencies and during the day at the weekend
- Take part in the regular resident anaesthetic team out of hours (on-call) duties with a primary responsibility to the Critical Care Unit, Obstetric Unit or Emergency Theatre.
- Demonstrate flexibility in working patterns to help the department provide a smooth running service
- Develop an interest in an area of anaesthesia with support from a consultant mentor
- There are opportunities to train as an appraiser or an educational supervisor or to take on a lead role within the department

- MBBS/MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
- Possess up-to-date knowledge of principles and practices in anaesthesia
- Demonstrate experience in covering on-call for Theatres, ITU and Obstetric anaesthesia
- Three years previous experience at ST1+ with at least one year in anaesthetics in RCA recognised posts for training
- A confident person who has the ability to manage, motivate and teach the junior medical staff
- Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent & important demands, follow instructions
- ATLC/ALS/PALS
- Demonstrated probity (displays honesty, integrity, aware of ethical dilemmas, respects confidentiality)

- FRCA or equivalent
- Experienced in use of Regional techniques
