Apprentice Clinical Technologist

Job summary

We are recruiting to a rare and exciting opportunity to join our friendly and dedicated team in an apprenticeship to become a Clinical Technologist - Radiation Safety & Imaging Physics.

You will undertake a professionally accredited 3 year BSc (Hons) Degree qualification in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology) specialising in Radiation Physics. This is with the University of West of England in Bristol (majority distance learning with 3 five-day blocks at UWE Bristol each year). This will commence in September 2025. Upon successful completion you will be eligible for entry on the professional register for clinical technologists (RCT).

Applicants must meet Apprenticeship criteria including: GCSE C/4 or above in Maths and English and A-level C or above in a relevant STEM subject or equivalent (other acceptable qualifications see university website link here)University link

Radiation Safety and Imaging Physics provides scientific support services to users of ionising radiation including X-Ray, CT, Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine. Alongside your studies you will be supporting the team of Clinical Scientists by working on diagnostic radiology equipment testing, radiation safety assessments and supporting systems for managing radioactive material.

You will work across our hospital sites including Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals and occasional visits to community sites.

Main duties of the job

Salary will be Band 5 Annex 21: Year 1 (£24,567) 65% top Band 5, Year 2 (£26,457) 70% top Band 5 and Year 3 (£28,347) 75% top Band 5. Internal applicants will be via Annex 30.

For this apprenticeship you will spend on average 1 day a week on online studies and the remaining on the job training and putting theory into practice to develop your skills to become a Clinical Technologist.

You will undertake a 3 year Degree qualification in Healthcare Science (Medical Physics Technology) specialising in Radiation Physics. The course has a blended learning approach combining face-to-face, work-based and online learning (combination of directed and independent study).

As part of on your job training you will:

  • Perform Quality Assurance tests and produce reports of performance on diagnostic radiography and non-ionising radiation equipment to ensure equipment is fit for purpose.
  • Help the team carry out radiation safety assessments.
  • Assist with the technical and scientific work of the service, working closely with other members of multi-disciplinary teams to ensure a high-quality service for staff and for patients.
  • Assist in the commissioning and acceptance of new radiographic equipment.
  • Assist with the work carried out by Radiation Safety & Imaging Physics managing the personal dosimetry for the Trust.
  • Assist in work with radioactive materials on site, including accurate record keeping.
