Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics (lower limb knee/hip arthroplasty)
East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust
The closing date is 28 May 2025
Job summary
An opportunity has arisen to join our team principally based at Ipswich Hospital for trauma and outpatients but elective surgery at Essex & Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre (ESEOC) on the Colchester site. The applicant may be required to undertake some clinical (outpatients) and non-clinical activities at Colchester Hospital.
We are inviting applications for a full time Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant with a specialist interest in lower limb knee/hip arthroplasty including revisions and periarticular / periprosthetic fractures. The precise nature of the role will depend on the applicants and discussion with the clinical directors. This is not a soft tissue or non arthroplasty post.
Applicants at the time of appointment will have completed CCT or equivalent (CESR or portfolio route) and must be on the Specialist Register. Applicants must be within 6 months of achieving this at interview date.
The appointment start date is expected to be August-October 2025.
Main duties of the job
This is a new post created due to the great opportunity afforded the department by the development of ESEOC. The Trust has also recognised the need to increase our Trauma provision to optimise the care for some of our most vulnerable patients. Ipswich has a busy Emergency department with a significant number of hip and increasing numbers of periprosthetic fractures in addition to a range of rural and urban upper and lower limb trauma. It is a Trauma Unit, in a network for major trauma MTC with Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge.
The post-holder will be expected to work within and help develop the hip/knee arthroplasty service. Arthroplasty and revision hip MDT is currently being reorganised to be across the ICS but will be a definite part of the job plan. This post does not involve any non-arthroplasty hip or knee surgery.
The post-holder will be expected to work with colleagues and the Clinical Lead & Director to ensure the service is delivered in line with best practice. The appointee will be largely based at Ipswich Hospital but may be required to undertake clinical and non-clinical work at other sites such as Colchester Hospital and will be expected to work flexibly.
This role involves a one in 12 on calls (adult and paediatric trauma). They will be expected to deal with the general trauma as well as subspecialty trauma including periprosthetic fractures. Chest and head injuries are admitted under the care of the General surgeons.
