Job summary

The friendly team at Ipswich Histopathology department are looking for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join us as an Advanced Practitioner in Specimen Dissection. The department is busy, processing approximately 24,000 surgical specimens a year from a wide range of specialities.

You must have relevant qualifications including the IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice (DEP) in Histological Dissection and have completed the IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma (ASD).

You will be expected to dissect the range of specimens we receive including category D and E specimens.

Main duties of the job

  • Working within the dissection team to assist Consultant Histopathologists in specimen dissection.oTeaching, training & supervising Biomedical Scientists & junior medical staff in appropriate dissection techniques.oProvision of support & advice to junior medical staff in the dissection area.oEnsure that specialised technical assistance required by pathologists is provided by BMS & MLA staff in the department.oWorking under own initiative & referring to the Consultant Histopathologist as required, undertake a role that involves the macroscopic description, dissection & block sampling of specimens that fall within the RCPath designation of category A, B, C, D & E. Accuracy & attention to detail is essential.o Undertake training to dissect a wider range of category D & E specimens using specialist knowledge as required by the service.oBe responsible (overseen by the Operational Lead BMS in Histopathology) for the day-to-day organisation of the histological dissection section of Histopathology.oIn liaison with the senior BMS within the department, ensure a timely workflow and assist in maintaining high scientific & technical standards.o Liaising closely with the other senior BMS staff in Histopathology, the Histopathology Laboratory Manager, Service Lead, & clinical team to ensure provision of a high-quality service within the resources available. They will demonstrate good leadership & management skills, continuously striving for improved performance within the service.
