Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Radiotherapy Equipment Engineer to join the Radiotherapy team at Colchester Hospital.

From April 2024, the department will have four Varian Truebeam linacs; a newly installed Varian Halcyon with Hypersight imaging; a Siemens Go.Open Pro CT simulator; Varian Bravos Brachytherapy afterloader and an Xstrahl Orthovoltage X-ray treatment unit.

Two of the Truebeam linacs should be replaced in 2024/2025, which means the post will provide an opportunity for you to work with the latest radiotherapy treatment and imaging technology.

You will be expected to work flexibly around the Radiotherapy Department's core treatment hours, with occasional unpredictable working.

Ideally, you will also have some basic engineering skills required for treatment machine maintenance. You should have a relevant degree or equivalent qualifications and experience, and ideally have proven experience in the field of radiotherapy equipment maintenance. You must be organised, self-motivated and have good communication skills.

If you do not fulfil the person specification criteria you may be considered for appointment at a lower grade with a plan to progress to the level required following additional specialist training.

Main duties of the job

Fault finding with knowledge of: analogue and digital electronics; RF and high voltage systems plus mechanical systems.

Work under the direction of the Lead Radiotherapy (RT) equipment engineer with scientific supervision from the Head of Radiotherapy Physics and Medical Physics Experts.

Participate in the provision of technical and engineering support and development of clinical radiotherapy services.

  • Relevant degree e.g. BSc Hons Clinical Technology or equivalent level of knowledge (e.g. HND, HNC, City and Guilds

Desirable

  • Specialist knowledge of advanced procedures attained from manufacturer training on radiotherapy equipment
  • Registration as a Clinical Technologist.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering, electro-mechanical and computer systems
  • Specialist knowledge of Radiotherapy related systems equipment including RF generation, HT generation, high vacuum systems and computer systems, image acquisition
  • General knowledge of mechanical and electronic workshop practices
  • Experience applying workshop technology to patient-critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
  • Experience in calibration and quality control
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure or human error and of the critical requirement for accuracy in Quality Control of radiotherapy equipment
