Job summary

We are looking to appoint an Advanced Retinal Nurse Practitioner in the Ophthalmology Department at ESNEFT Colchester Site on a 25 hour per week permanent contract.

As a member of staff working in Ophthalmology, we want you to feel proud to work in our department, in an environment which seeks to nurture and develop all individuals in our Team.

You will be working with and alongside medical staff, Optometrists, Clinical nurse Specialists, Ophthalmology Technicians and nursing staff to help deliver an efficient and safe Medical Retinal Service to patients.

You will need relevant clinical experience, be self motivated and enthusiastic with an interest in Medical and Surgical Retina disease and its management along with ability, with support and training, to help develop and embed the role.

We would be happy to consider offering this as a developmental role meaning if you are near the end of your MSc you would commence as a Band 7 until you have completed all competencies and have possession of MSc in Advanced Practice. You will then progress onto a band 8a salary. Please see band 7 JD/PS to reflect this.

Main duties of the job

Undertake comprehensive assessment of patients, initiate and/or undertake clinical investigations, where appropriate, established diagnosis within set guidelines, and record clinical findings using the department information system e.g. Medisoft and CareFlow and or refer to the Doctor as appropriate.

Obtain formal written consent for procedures carried out in the department following current principles and Trust Policy on consent to treatment.

Work autonomously to carry out Intravitreal injections, incorporating the use of Patient Group Direction, prescribing rights, agreed protocols.

Act as a source of information and advice to patients, their relatives and other healthcare, and other healthcare professionals.

Participate in care of patients attending all ophthalmology clinics held in the macula clinic as required.

Carry out formal and informal teaching within the hospital to range of health care professionals and contribute to education and training programmes as requested/appropriate.

Create a positive learning environment within clinical settings to encourage and facilitate individual and shared learning and professional development.

Participate, where appropriate, in the education of patients and the general public.

  • oPossession of 1st degree in a clinical field e.g. Nursing, physiotherapy at a minimum 2:2 classification

  • oNon-Medical Prescribing (v300) if appropriate to registered profession/role
