The job plan will then be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.

The Job Plan is based on a framework of a 10PA rota comprising 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA. Of which DCC are split 6.5/1.0 clinical and administration with SPA 1.5 being core SPA with

Addition roles such a teaching and training and clinical supervision making up the additional PA dependant on activities.

The Emergency Department Consultants currently provide the following:

Clinical Cover (EPIC) 09:00-21:00 Monday to Friday (On call 21:00-09:00). The clinical cover is split into a morning shift 09:00-13:30 and afternoon/evening of 13:00-21:00 plus the on call.

Clinical (DCC) Admin 1.5 PAs per week (Admin)

Weekends Saturday morning clinical shift 09:00-13:00, on call until 09:00 Monday morning.

Supported by additional consultant clinical shifts 12:00-22:00 Saturday and Sunday. These shifts are currently supported by locums.

The basic DCC is worked in standard PA rates i.e. between 7am and 7pm. Activity outside this is currently remunerated 1 PA per 3 hours in lie with national consultant contract. This variation in PAs is taken into account within the rota allocation. The variation in shift patterns may affect unpredictable on call PAs.

This will be monitored and reviewed at Job Plan meeting.

Rostered SPA activity includes departmental teaching on Wednesday afternoons, clinical and educational supervision of junior doctors, departmental roles and CPD and revalidation requirements.

Additional roles such as Educational Supervision or trust wide roles will be appropriately recognised.

As the consultant establishment increases through ongoing recruitment plans, the job plan and working pattern will be reviewed to provide additional clinical cover to the department. Our long-term goal is to provide minimum 16 hours a day of direct consultant cover to the Emergency Department. Any changes to job plans will be negotiated as part of the annual review.

The consultants currently manage the rota on an annualised basis meaning that annual leave is flexible. The work plan allows for 3 WTE consultants to be on leave at any one time (4 if LTFT consultant on leave) and the team work together to make sure that all requests are considered equally. Six weeks minimum is required for request
