Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to become part of a small Newborn Hearing Screening team working at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) based at Colchester hospital.
This is a part-time position (15 hours per week), with no specific days.
You will work as an integral member of the newborn hearing screening team, primarily in the delivery of the newborn screening programme. You will work under the supervision of the local manager and be part of a dedicated team of screeners ensuring that quality and family friendly service is delivered for families in both Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals.
You will be involve with direct handling of newborn babies and contact with parents. It will involve gathering and accurately recording clinical and test data relevant to the newborn screening process. The Newborn Hearing Team screen over three and a half thousand babies each year.
On completion of your training you will be expected to complete your NBHS Level 3 Diploma.

Main duties of the job
- To identify on a daily basis which babies are eligible for screening by communicating with staff on wards and Neonatal Unit. To analyse newborns state of arousal during screening and assess baby's condition. By following guidelines and protocols, identify which babies require follow-up appointments.
- Organise workload for each day in consultation with other members of the team and manage and prioritise their work to ensure good time management.
- To carry out the Newborn Hearing Screening for all babies eligible following National Guidelines and Protocols, using the equipment appropriately. This will involve direct handling of newborn babies, including babies in the Neonatal unit (NNU) on a daily basis
- Direct contact with new mothers both on the post-natal wards, NNU and within community clinics will be required, while gaining informed consent and explaining potential outcomes from the screen.
- Newborn Hearing Screeners must promote a professional, sensitive, welcoming and caring environment with a family friendly approach to care.
- Take an active part in service development through Team meetings, proposing and implementing change to maximise the efficiency of the service.
- To be responsible for equipment used. All equipment must be checked and calibrated daily to ensure it is working correctly within set guidelines and protocols. Any faults should be reported at the earliest opportunity.
