An opportunity has arisen to join our team at Colchester Hospital, we are inviting applications for a full time post, Consultant in Anaesthetics.
We are an enthusiastic and friendly team of Consultants who welcome new colleagues to join our forward-thinking, ambitious and sociable department.
The department comprises of a team of thirty-five Consultant Anaesthetists, including nine Critical Care Consultants and three chronic pain Consultants. We have two Associate Specialists, a team of Specialty Doctors and trainees from the Foundation Programme and Eastern Region School of Anaesthesia.
Main duties of the job
The new appointee will participate in their share of Consultant clinical responsibilities within the department which will include fixed or flexible operating theatre sessions and participation in the out of hours on-call rota.
The post-holder will participate in the general and obstetric on-call rota, currently 1 in 16. Consultants are resident from 5-10pm Monday-Friday and non-resident overnight. Weekend on calls are worked on a shift pattern, with one consultant (resident) covering Saturday and Sunday days (8am-8pm) and another consultant (non-resident) covering the nights (8pm-8am). The weekend night consultant also covers Friday night.
This is included in the job plan and remunerated according to current contractual terms and conditions. The non-resident on-call is 0.6PA per week with an availability supplement of 3%
Consultants who no longer partake in the night on call rota, cover trauma lists and CEPOD day lists at the weekend - currently at a frequency of 1:9. This reduces the number of on call at weekends for those on the on call rota.
This post has a requirement for you to participate in Saturday working to support both Anaesthetics and our Elective Orthopaedic Centre (The Elective Orthopaedic Centre opens in August 2024).

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There's a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children's Unit.

£88,364 to £119,133 a year per annum
The successful candidates will take a full and equal share in the out of hours services for theatres and obstetrics. The out of hours cover involves resident evening sessions from 1700 -2200 hours and resident weekend daytime sessions from 0800-2000 hours with on call cover from home for the remaining time. Weekends are worked on a shift basis with Friday/Saturday/Sunday night on call or Saturday/Sunday daytime
0.60 PA is allocated for non-resident on call. Currently the frequency of the on call rota is 1 in 16 with prospective cover, this may be subject to change. The availability supplement is 3%. DCC activity will not be timetabled the day after on call commitments.
- Must be on GMC Specialist Register in Anaesthesia or be eligible for entry within 6 months of interview
- Higher training obstetric anaesthesia
- Experience of working within the NHS
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Taken part in teaching of junior trainees to the level required by the RCA
- ATLS, APLS, ALS
- Higher or advanced training in vascular anaesthesia
- Evidence of some management training, eg attendance at specific management course, specific management qualification
- Higher degree (MD, PhD)
