An opportunity has arisen to join our team at Ipswich Hospital for a full time Consultant post in Geriatric and General Medicine.
The integrated pathways division has the older people's services, therapies and community services for Ipswich and East Suffolk sitting within the same division allowing acute geriatric services to work seamlessly with community services and allows the flexibility to meet patient needs wherever they may be.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join Consultant colleague covering 14 patients on one of the Older Peoples Wards, supported by a Staff Grade doctor or SpR, CMT and two FY1 doctors. The post holder will be the clinical supervisor of some of these juniors. This will involve a daily consultant led board round (may be shared), weekly MDT meeting and monthly clinical governance meeting. The post holder will be expected to provide appropriate clinical leadership to the progressive, innovative multidisciplinary ward team, in conjunction with the other consultant and ward sister.

There's a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children's Unit.

The post holder will have 2 FAB sessions per week whilst listed on the time table below the actual session will vary from week to week as cross cover is included in the PA calculation. These sessions involve seeing up to 4 patients with the specialist nursing, pharmacy and therapy team in FAB for a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, we have access to dietitian, community therapy and REACT our admission avoidance team which can provide up to 4 visits a day and a short term night sit as well as therapy in the patients home, they link in with the community Dementia Intensive Support Team, social services and the Red Cross to support people in through a short term deterioration in health and function. During the time in FAB you will also hold the hot phone this is a mobile phone which enable any GP or community therapist to phone for advice or to book a same/next day patient into FAB. Our FIT team also use this for support and 2 appointments each day are reserved for direct transfers from ED for patients who can probably be discharged but need a more comprehensive/specialist assessment before leaving.
The GLINT (Geriatric Liaison to the Integrated Neighbourhood Teams) is our plan to move some falls assessments out of FAB and into the local teams with consultant support this will improve patient experience and also stop duplication of assessment between community and FAB therapists. This clinic is established in some localities and being developed in others.
This post can include a slot on the general medicine on call rota. This is 1 in 8 weekends 1 day only, there is a 12 hour shift in EAU reviewing patients admitted acutely, then availability overnight from home if needed. This is supported by an acute on call junior team and 2 medical SpRs during the day with a Hospital at Night scheme overnight. The successful candidate will have the option of joining this rota if they wish.
