Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated and committed radiologist to join our friendly and dynamic team within the Radiology Department at Colchester General.

Summary of offer

  1. Consultant Radiologist - general radiologist with specialist interest in Musculoskeletal Imaging

This post is a general radiology consultant post with approx 50% of sessions dedicated to subspecialty interest in MSK imaging.

MSK sessions would include:

MSK ultrasound - referrals received from primary and secondary care. MSK US service is also supported by an experienced sonographer and two locum radiologists.

MSK ultrasound interventions - currently only provide this service for secondary care referrals only

Fluoroscopy - primarily arthrograms and injection referrals from secondary care. The spinal service is provided at Ipswich hospital

MSK CT - mainly trauma, diagnostic spinal work and pre op orthopaedic planning CT's

MRI - secondary care referrals - mainly from rheumatology and orthopaedics

MDT's - Rheumatology, Foot and Ankle fortnightly, upper and complex knee MDT's once a month

The sarcoma service is supported by RNOH, Stanmore.

We are also in the process of having a new centre built, the Dame Clare Marx building which will house the the Elective Orthopaedic Centre.

Main duties of the job

The post duties will be primarily based at the Colchester General Hospital. The timetable will include 8.5 direct clinical care (DCC) sessions and 1.5 supporting programmed activities (SPA). 1 SPA is usually off-site.

The Candidate will be expected to share with colleagues a commitment to the general reporting, Duty radiology, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, MRI, and CT depending on interests and experience.

  • Provide specialist radiological advice and services to users of the radiology department, including MDT participation
  • Accept responsibility for compliance with ionising and radiation regulations, along with radiation protection supervisor and the radiation protection officers
  • Accept personal responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to him/her.
  • Provide advice and information as required to clinical colleagues and other staff
  • Share responsibility for the supervision, training, and professional development of radiographic staff including radiology SpRs and other departmental staff as necessary
  • Attend regular departmental meetings and participate in department governance and development of the service
  • General Radiology oncall runs as a 1:10 - 1:12 oncall. Oncall work is outsourced overnight from 830pm weekdays and 5pm weekends to Everlight. The oncall radiologist is onsite 5pm-830pm weekdays and 9am-5pm weekends and bank holidays. The radiologist remains oncall overnight from home in case of emergency ultrasound and IT failure to connect to Everlight.

About us

We are also in the process of having a new centre built, the Dame Clare Marx building which will house the Elective Orthopaedic Centre. Within this will be:

  • Eight new ultra clean air theatres
  • 72 beds
  • 16 recovery beds with post op intensive support area plus diagnostics/x-ray
  • 20 day surgery admission/recovery space

Several sessions would be devoted to general radiology including acute inpatient and A+E CT reporting, general and inpatient acute MRI reporting and duty room or "hot seat".

The candidate would be a member of the general radiology oncall (1:10 -1:12 depending on numbers of radiologists).

Home reporting is an option with the majority of full time radiologists reporting one session or one day of outpatient reporting from home.

Additional reporting on top of 10PA role, is available with additional sessions, ultrasound lists and pay per scan additional out of hours reporting (subject to conditions).
