Job summary
The post is a new role following successful allocation of national funding following the Ockenden bid process. The successful candidate will have a strong obstetric focus, and be able to demonstrate experience and interest in fetal medicine and high risk obstetrics. A complementary interest in maternal medicine would also be of advantage and lend support to the existing consultant body in their provision of obstetric services.
We are also looking to appoint an individual who can actively contribute to and support the implementation of the National Maternity Transformation Programme. It is intended that the appointed candidate would have a specific governance role to support the existing departmental framework. Previous experience or understanding of key transformation initiatives, which complement their clinical practice such as Continuity of Carer or aspects of Saving Babies Lives would be an asset. The successful candidate will also provide joint obstetric leadership to support the Perinatal Mortality Review pathway, working closely with all members of the multi-professional review team, and parents to ensure a robust review of mortality and learning from reviews. Previous experience and understanding of Perinatal Mortality review and clinical investigations would be advantageous.

Main duties of the job
This post has a standard 10 PA contract but there will be an opportunity for additional regular programmed activity subject to job planning. The role includes specialist fetal medicine scanning lists, antenatal clinic (general and be the second Consultant for the Twin clnic), general gynaecology (out-patient clinic and theatre), educational supervision of junior clinicians, and the appropriate level of core SPA sessions. There is also the opportunity to have a regular caesarean section list and there will be additional SPA time to support aspects of maternity governance and PMRT. The successful candidate will be required to participate within a 1 in 12 out of hours on call rota and day time hot weeks for both acute obstetric and gynaecological care.
The fetal medicine unit provides expert fetal medicine diagnosis and management of conditions such as congenital abnormalities, rhesus disease, intrauterine growth restriction, monitoring and management of multiple pregnancy complications and other conditions affecting the fetus and the mother. CVS, amniocentesis and amnio-reduction are all performed. Fetal echocardiography is also performed in the unit.
You would be joining the existing team of 2 fetal medicine consultants and 2 fetal medicine midwifes and expected to work 3PA's of cross site fetal medicine scanning.
