Senior Sister / Charge Nurse, Respiratory

Ward 15

Band 7 - £46,148 - £52,809 per annum

Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced innovative and motivated ward manager to join our respiratory team.

We are looking for someone who has experience and passion in respiratory nursing, who will be able to provide clinical management and leadership, continue to develop and maintain good practice, who will engage with the trusts initiatives and Nursing Midwifery and Therapies strategy, as well as support and engage staff in driving these initiatives forward over the forthcoming years.

Ward 15 is a 29 bedded male respiratory ward that supports patients with a range of respiratory conditions including those requiring NIV or tracheostomy care.

As a member of the team you will also be supported by the Medical Matron and the Medical Head of Nursing.

Main duties of the job

To act as the professional role model, leading and co-ordinating the nursing team. To have continuous responsibility for the management and organisation of the ward/department within the available resources.

To be accountable for the overall provision of excellent nursing care and to work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team.

To assess the effectiveness of current practices within the ward/department and introduce innovations that lead to improved quality of care.

To maintain the highest standards of patient care at all times, ensuring that quality and compassion are your top priorities.

To develop the Ward philosophy of nursing and its contribution to the Trust's and division's nursing philosophy of care, ensuring that all policies and procedures are implemented and to lead on the development of nursing practice.

To ensure efficient management of resources, fulfilment of contractual obligations and achievement of National Standards and government targets.

To be proactive in the prevention and management of complaints and when they do occur to investigate and respond in accordance with the Trust complaints and improvements policies.

To ensure that issues relating to clinical governance are addressed within the ward area.

Act as a credible, strong and visible role model in the ward ensuring that there is regular contact with patients, carers and staff.

Provide excellent clinical leadership by demonstrating best practice in the clinical environment, working on a one-to-one basis with both staff and patients and engaging with other members of the MDT to observe performance of care from all levels; challenging, correcting or encouraging as practice is observed, ensuring high standards are maintained.

Ensure that there are systems in place to store, check and administer medicines in accordance with the Trust, National and NMC standards and policies.

To promote innovative and collaborative working practice within the nursing and multi-disciplinary team, to ensure an effective working environment is developed and maintained and to ensure outside agencies are involved where appropriate.

Representing the ward/department at meetings, participating in audit, research and other projects, whilst contributing to the development of policy Trust wide.

To actively participate with MDT meetings raising and discussing concerns and actively seeking acceptable and best outcomes solutions for the patients.

The post holder will ensure that they are aware of all issues relating to clinical governance, cancer peer review, quality assurance and clinical effectiveness and that they carry out these duties in accordance with these frameworks and standards. All staff within their team are to be made fully aware of their individual responsibilities as regards these issues.
