Head of Nursing - Emergency Department

Hours: Full time -37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

Do you have extensive nursing and leadership experience within the Emergency Department? Do you feel ready to accept a new challenge and take on a senior leadership role where patient experience is at the forefront of all you do.

Milton Keynes University Hospital have had a business case recently approved to expand our fantastic and hardworking emergency department. Roles approved in this case were Registered Nurses, Sisters/Charge Nurses, a Practice Development Lead and Head of Nursing. This is a brand-new role to the Trust, and you will have the opportunity of being first in post if you are successful.

Working closely with the Divisional Chief Nurse, this role will require someone who is willing to work hard and dedicate themselves to ensuring services are delivered in a highly professional and clinically safe manner in conjunction with national policies and Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards.

Main duties of the job

You will need strong leadership and people management skills, to lead the development of nurse-led initiatives and improve performance in conjunction with other members of the senior team in ED and the Division including acute and community colleagues.

The postholder will lead on supporting the team to promote excellence in nursing care to maintain and improve clinical standards ensuring care is delivered to the highest quality, inspiring patient, and public confidence.

Working as part of the UEC Leadership Team, alongside the Service manager, Matron and clinical lead, the post holder will be professionally, operationally and managerially responsible for nursing in the departments.

Through strong clinical leadership the Head of Nursing will support the teams to promote excellence in nursing care to maintain and improve clinical standards. The post holder will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond.   • Complete Practice Supervisor and Assessor training and act as a practice supervisor and assessor providing supervision to junior staff, student nurses and other learners.
  • Maintain an awareness of current developments in Urgent and Emergency Care developments and practice.

Professional Development

  • Maintain Continuous Professional Development in line with Trust Policy, the Knowledge and Skills Framework and professional bodies requirements for revalidation.
  • Ensure own practice is up to date and evidence based and demonstrate an awareness of current, relevant research.

Service improvement

  • To have a clear understanding of the vision of the Trust and be able to translate this into local context for operational implementation within the area.
  • To lead and support staff to work across patient pathways, encouraging and fostering joint working to facilitate seamless transition of care for patients, the principles of self-care and community engagement where possible.

People Management

  • Be responsible for the line management of the matron and Advanced Clinical Practitioners within the departments.
  • Assist with monitoring staff attendance to ensure a healthy and safe environment for staff and patients.
