Job summary

This post currently attracts £10,000 Golden Hello on appointment, plus Anniversary payments as following:

  • £5k after 12 months employment
  • £5k after 24 months employment

In addition, this post attracts relocation expenses of up to £8k

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join the dynamic and proactive Palliative Care Service in Milton Keynes. We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who will bring skills, knowledge and experience to this new role.

Application must hold full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the time of interview and are required to hold membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications). CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team managing patients in their own homes, in the Hospice in patient unit and in the hospital setting.

The post holder will be contracted to provide a Palliative Medicine service along with their 2 consultant colleagues to Willen Hospice and Milton Keynes University Hospital. Candidates must hold full and specialist registration (with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council and hold membership of the Royal College of Physicians. Newly qualified UK trained applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CTT) or be within six months of being awarded CCT or equivalent by date of interview.

This is a new full- time post for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine

The successful candidate will join the existing 2 Palliative Medicine Consultants to provide leadership and clinical expertise to the Milton Keynes Palliative Care services.

The focus of this new post is on providing seamless Specialist Palliative Care that follows the patient regardless of setting. The post holder will provide consultant cover and specialist advice to the Willen Hospice community services (Willen at Home Team and Therapeutic & Wellbeing Team), the Willen Inpatient Unit and to clinicians at Milton Keynes University Hospital. The post holder will join a telephone advisory 2nd on call rota coordinated across the region. This responsibility is approximately 1:7 and attracts a 3% availability supplementation to annual salary

The post will be hosted as an NHS post by Milton Keynes University Hospital with their terms and conditions. All responsibilities will be confirmed at the point of final job planning.

This is an exciting time to be joining the team as the new, purpose built, cancer centre opened in early 2020 providing fantastic facilities for our oncology patients. A Same Day Emergency Care Centre opened in November 2022 to facilitate rapid assessment, avoidable admissions and early discharge for patients. Willen Hospice have completed their Building a Legacy programme which has significantly improved the facilities for their patients

Key responsibilities of role

Willen Hospice

  • Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Willen Hospice with emphasis on supporting the community team including speciality doctor / GP trainee
  • MDT Lead for the Willen Therapeutics and Wellbeing Team
  • Facilitator of complex case review meetings and education meetings for Clinical Nurse Specialists
  • Review of palliative patients in the community (average 5 / week)
  • Facilitator of reflective learning sessions for Hospice teams.
  • Attendance at the bi-monthly Milton Keynes Joint Palliative Care Group meetings
  • Provide support for community teams
  • Support the Director of Clinical Services in determining a future education provision strategy for the hospice.
  • Support the Clinical Educator/Practice Development Team in delivering a dynamic and forward thinking education programme across Milton Keyne
    • Participate in the organisation and delivery of education programmes for hospice staff and external stakeholders.
    • Set up a journal club for palliative medicine clinicians across the BLMK ICB (Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes)
    • Supporting Quality Improvement
    • Provide cross cover for consultant colleagues

    Milton Keynes University Hospital

    • Work in an advisory/liaison capacity, providing advice to the clinical teams caring for the patient when asked by that team to do so
    • Contribute to education of staff as required
    • Focus on patients known to the hospice community services, developing a clear discharge plan including advance care planning and treatment escalation plan
    • The post holder will also have opportunity to attend site-specific Cancer MDT meetings and other hospital meetings according to their areas of interest.
