Head of Capital Projects

Estates Department

Band 8b - £58,972 - £68,525 p.a.

Hours: 37.5 per week,all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working

The Estates Department has a vacancy for a Head of Capital Projects to enable the Capital Projects team to successfully deliver a programme of improvements on the Milton Keynes University Hospital site. The Department serves a growing Acute Foundation Trust Hospital of around 450 beds and is committed to providing a quality service.

This is an opportunity for a suitably qualified, motivated individual to join our team. You will have excellent organisational and communication skills and ability to use your initiative. You should have healthcare planning experience at a Senior Level and a proven track record of delivering capital programs including projects up to £1m. You will be able to lead the Capital Projects team with confidence and motivate and support them to provide the best service to end users. The Capital Projects Team undertake projects which refurbish and upgrade the environment, repurpose spaces for different clinical uses and undertake works to address backlog maintenance.

You will need appropriate experience and hold a relevant qualification in the Built Environment.

Main duties of the job

To be professionally accountable to the Associate Director of Estates

To effectively develop and manage the Capital Projects Service within the Trust to ensure a safe, cost efficient & quality service.

The post holder will be a key member of the Estates Team and responsible for Capital Projects:

  • Capital Projects from £5k and above, generally refurbishment works of the existing estate (excluding Projects undertaken by the Strategic Capital Team)
  • Works in various areas of the Trust, including some specialist spaces such as Pathology, Sterile Services, etc where technical and operational difficulties may exist.
  • Line Management of the Capital Projects Managers

Job responsibilities

  1. To manage, develop and implement Trusts Capital Program via a planned evaluation of capital development works within Estates.
  2. To manage capital projects and develop services: Design Services: Business Case Development including OBC/FBC. Capital budget financial management- in conjunction with finance department: Capital programme works - in development, in progress and post occupation: project management Professional advisor/contractor management and performance: Backlog maintenance programming and planning.

Functional responsibilities

  1. To advise the Associate Director of Estates as required, to ensure service is maintained in the absence of the post holder and ensure contingency is in place in times of absence, including handovers of any works during time of planned leave.
  2. To ensure that Asbestos records are checked for any capital projects and contractors are provided with access to these records, instigating asbestos R&D surveys as appropriate in conjunction with any capital project.

Financial responsibilities

  1. To ensure expenditure is controlled across the capital projects.
  2. Responsible for production of Technical Tenders and follow Trust SFIs.

Personnel responsibilities

  1. To provide managerial support and leadership to Capital Project Managers
  2. To maintain effective channels of communication within the department between management, staff and other hospital departments.
