Theatre Operational Manager

Band 8c £70,417 - £81,138 Per annum
Hours: 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
The division of surgery is looking to recruit a driven, self-motivated and experienced individual to join and lead our theatre team. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record within senior theatre positions. They will bring with them service development experience, together with illustrating the ability to lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team to maximum productivity, whilst also being able to develop and maintain an environment of trust, diversity, and inclusion.
The theatre complex consists of 12 theatres covering both elective and emergency work. You will be joining and leading a dedicated, passionate, hardworking and welcoming team.

Main duties of the job
The theatre operational manager is responsible for overseeing the strategic direction and operational management of the theatre operating department. Through utilisation of leadership skills, contributing to the delivery of exceptional patient care and the efficient functioning of the theatre services. This involves achievement of all operational performance and financial targets, whilst improving services aligned to best practice standards, to improve the quality of services provided within budget. Maximising theatre utilisation, Consultant compliance and maintaining clinical standards, the post holder will provide exceptional ethical leadership and direction to all staff across theatres, acting as the point of contact for advice and expertise relating to all operational issues.
To apply for this position, you must be either HCPC or NMC registered with perioperative experience at a Band 7 level or equivalent.

Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the theatre department, aligning its goals with the overall Divisional and organisational objectives.
- Develop and implement policies, procedures and protocols to ensure delivery of high quality and safe theatre services.
- Collaborate with senior management and stakeholders to establish long term plans and initiatives that enhance the theatre departments performance and reputation.
Operational Management
- Oversee and co-ordinate the day to day operations of the theatre department, ensuring efficient use of resources including staffing, equipment and facilities.
- Monitor theatre schedules and optimise resource allocation to ensure smooth workflow and patient throughput.
- Foster an environment of continuous improvement, identifying opportunities for innovation, streamlining processes and enhancing service provision
Staff Management and Development
- Lead, motivate and manage a multidisciplinary team of staff, including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and support staff.
- Demonstrate and promote effective multidisciplinary leadership and management.
- In conjunction with the matron, recruit, train and develop staff, promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional growth, ensuring staff have access to clear career pathways that promote growing our own and succession planning.
Quality Assurance and Compliance
- To ensure that the theatre team conduct mandatory surgical safety checks in accordance with WHO guidance and NPSA Five Steps to Safer Surgery.
- Hold overall responsibility for Health & Safety (H&S) throughout the theatres department. Ensure compliance with relevant clinical standards, guidelines and regulatory requirements including infection control protocols, health and safety regulations and risk management policies.
Financial and Resource Management
- Prepare and manage the theatre department budget, ensuring effective resource utilisation and financial sustainability.
- Monitor expenditure, identify cost saving opportunities, and implement measures to achieve budgetary targets
Stakeholder Engagement
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including surgeons, consultants and other healthcare professionals.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop and implement strategies that optimise theatre utilisation, patient pathways, and service delivery to included sterile services [HSDU], operational teams and business partners etc.
