Main duties of the job

Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust

The successful candidate will need to work closely with the current Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeons and multi-disciplinary team within the Orthopaedic department and with colleagues across the Trust.

It is essential that the successful candidate is able to demonstrate appropriate training & experience in Spinal Surgery, in addition to Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. This post will have a mixture of flexible and standard clinical sessions.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The job plan on appointment will consist of a split of 7.5:2.5 DCC/SPA. The SPA component is made up of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings etc.) and non-core activities with prior agreement. Non-core activities are discussed and agreed within the Trust (via an agreed tariff and, on occasion, through a personal agreement). Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Following appointment, non-core SPA may be used to participate in our consultant development programme, or in acquiring or consolidating specific skills and expertise. Non-core SPA is only available if specific activities and objectives are mutually agreed in job planning.

Review of Job Plan

The job plan is subject to review once a year and is signed off between the post holder, the CSU Lead and an Executive Director of the Trust. Participation in annual appraisals is a contractual requirement. The Trust has procedures for resolving disagreements concerning job plan, either following appointment or at annual review.

The appointment is for a orthopaedic Spinal Consultant Surgeon based at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This is an additional post to help address the growing needs of our community.

Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients.

To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Trauma and Orthopaedic Services including General Orthopaedic On-Call.

Teaching and training of junior staff.

To actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.

To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing professional development (CPD).

The programme will contain a mixture of outpatient clinics, theatres and on-call commitments.

The On Call commitment is at 1:9 or less (Low frequency Category A) on the General On call Trauma and Orthopaedic Rota.

The appointee would be expected to work closely with the current Consultant Spinal Surgeon and other Orthopaedic Consultants providing non-complex spinal surgical care.

The assessment and management of Spinal surgical patients, including support for Trauma meetings, sub-speciality advice, and liaising with the Network Trauma and Spinal networks. Supporting the Junior staff to ensure that Orthopaedic Spinal facilities and capabilities are utilised appropriately for improved patient care. To work with specialist pain and rehabilitation services to support them in their management of chronic back pain sufferers. To work within the regional health service to advise on Health management and preventative primary and secondary care.

The post is based at Milton Keynes University Hospital, in the future outreach clinics and network sessions may exist. The Hospital currently undertakes HVLC work in line with the national framework. It is expected that the appointee would work to undertake operative sessions when possible to address the waiting list backlog, whilst continuing to support the Emergency and Trauma needs of the Hospital.

Teaching

There are a number of specific roles within the hospital relating to our joint endeavours with the University of Buckingham Medical School. These roles involve teaching and the wider management of the undergraduate training programme. These activities are recognised explicitly in job plans. Day-to-day teaching on the wards and in clinic is accounted for within direct clinical care (DCC) time.

Facilities for appointee

The appointee will have access to an office, and secretarial support will be available. Consultant offices are equipped with a Personal Computer with suitable peripherals and connectivity. The library has access to current books and journals.

Annual appraisal

All doctors must have an annual appraisal and review of the job plan part of which will include completion of Mandatory Training. Trust appraisers are appointed by the Medical Director for appraisal and revalidation. Key issues arising from the appraisal process are relayed to the CSU Lead and Medical Director.

Continuous Personal DevelopmentThe Trust is fully committed to CPD. There are internal meetings (with certificates issued) plus a study leave allowance of 30 days over 3 years with funding available. As part of the job plan there is a core SPA (1PA) for supporting professional activities and CPD.
