Job summary

Applicants are invited to apply for an International Clinical Fellow post in Anaesthetics and Critical Care at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The purpose of this post is to support and enhance the Anaesthetic and Critical care services within the division. This post has been approved under the Medical Training Initiative scheme and as an RCoA sponsored post the candidate will have regular ARCP assessments, educational supervision and the RCoA will assist in PLAB exemption if required to support GMC registration.

As an MTI Fellow you will also be eligible to sit FRCA. We a looking for applicants looking to develop their clinical, communication and leadership skills in a fast-paced environment.

As a Medical Training Initiative post, please note only applicants without GMC registration are eligible to apply for this role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will principally conduct clinical work in theatres, ICU and providing obstetric anaesthesia, and will participate in the out-of-hours rotas for these areas. The anaesthetic and intensive care departments at MKUH are accredited to provide training for all stages by the RCoA and FICM.

Job description

Job responsibilities

This job description reflects the present requirements and objectives of the post; it does not form part of your contract of employment. As the duties of the post change and develop, the job description will be reviewed and will be subject to amendment, in consultation with the post holder.

Duties of the post include:

  • Pre-operative assessment, management of pre-medication of patients scheduled to undergo routine and emergency surgery
  • Administration of anaesthesia (local and general)
  • Post-operative assessment and management of postoperative problems in conjunction with surgical colleagues
  • Administration of epidurals and general anaesthetics for the obstetric department.
  • Deliver ICU-based care on the Department of Critical Care. Escalate to on-call ICM consultant when situation is out with post holders skill and knowledge set. Review of DoCC patients on twice daily ward rounds along with review and assessment of deteriorating patients in ED and wards (including paediatrics). To assist ad work closely with the trust rapid response tea
  • Transfer of level 3 patients both within the trust and between hospitals for time-critical treatment
  • Communicate effectively with fellow medical staff, nursing and all members of the multi-disciplinary team. Deliver compassionate, accurate and timely information to patients and their relatives
  • Participation in the 1 in 8 or 1 in 9 on-call rota. This rota is shared with trainees in ICM and anaesthetics from the Oxford deanery, and Trust Doctors locally. Cover will be provided to ICM, obstetrics and theatres
  • Sharing supervision of junior anaesthetists when covering emergency out of hours work with the on-call Consultant Anaesthetist.
  • To participate in annual appraisal and job plan reviews
  • The post holder will be required to undertake educational activities and support both personal and Trust CME/CPD. As a MTI (medical training initiative) trainee, they will be expected and supported to undertake training and accreditation as detailed by the RCoA.
  • Due responsibility for arranging leave after prior discussion and agreement with the doctor responsible for maintaining the rota and with permission from the supervising Consultant and Clinical Director.
  • The post holder will be expected to share fully in all aspects of the work of the department, including the formal and informal teaching of junior staff members and training of medical nursing and paramedic staff.
  • The post holder will be expected to share fully in the audit and quality improvement activities of the department and to attend the monthly audit meetings.
  • Direct line communications of disputes, distress or need to work outside routine must be cleared/ approved by the Clinical Director or in their absence, the Clinical Tutor

Clinical skills

  • Acute care safe: it is expected that the postholder should be acute care safe. This can be demonstrated by an upto-date ALS certificate or equivalent.
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job.
