Advanced Clinical Pharmacist - SACT Medicines Safety

Job summary

This role is responsible for leading on pharmacy governance and medicines safety within Oncology & Haematology, working with the Medication Safety Officer (MSO).

The post holder will also co-ordinate the development and approval of new and modified systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) regimens on the e-prescribing system.

They will play a key role in leading on education and training within the Cancer Services Pharmacy team.

Main duties of the job

Work with the Medication Safety Officer with a focus on Oncology and Haematology to lead, assess, manage, report and improve governance and safety with regards to medicines, policies/procedures/processes and reported and observed incidents and complaints.

To lead and manage compliance in Oncology & Haematology with all relevant statutes, legislation and best practice with regards to medicines, processes, policies and procedures.

Lead on the development, co-ordination and delivery of clinical and professional training programmes for staff visiting or new to Oncology/Haematology Pharmacy, and on e-prescribing training for Oncology/Haematology medical and pharmacy staff.

To support learning and best practice recommendations from the Trust Medication Safety Group (MSG) which reports into the Medicines Committee.

To be responsible for the pharmacy set up of SACT regimens on the SACT e-prescribing system, with other members of the pharmacy team.

To lead improvement projects in Cancer Services to improve quality of care.

Essential

  • Registered as a pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
  • Clinical Pharmacy Diploma or evidence of equivalent skills/knowledge.

Desirable

Knowledge & experience

Essential

  • Substantial post-registration experience in hospital pharmacy and significant experience of working in Haematology and/or Oncology
  • Good knowledge and understanding of cancer and its treatment obtained through post graduate study and clinical experience
  • Good knowledge of common cancers and management of those cancers
  • Up to date knowledge of anti-cancer treatment protocols and how to interpret them
  • Knowledge of side effects of anti-cancer treatments and management of side effects
  • Good understanding of the funding of cancer treatments within the NHS and the NICE appraisal process
  • Ability to identify and manage risks
  • Knowledge of medicines safety and reporting of incidents
  • Understanding of risk management and quality systems
