Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust

Medical Secretary - Diabetes & Endocrinology

The closing date is 12 June 2025

Job summary

We are looking for a passionate and driven individual able to thrive in a busy and fast-paced environment within the Endocrine & Diabetes Medical Secretariat.

Your main responsibility will be typing clinical correspondence to both patients and medical professionals, supporting our fantastic Diabetes & Endocrine clinicians to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients.

You will be the first point of contact for patients and be able to use initiative to deal with any queries from either patients or the clinical teams - so a calm and empathetic approach is essential for this position.

In addition, you will learn about the pathways for diagnostic, outpatient and day case services, understanding where patients are in their journey and how you might be able to help progress.

You will be required to organise follow-up appointments and track diagnostic results and will liaise with the consultants to ensure that they are aware of results, minimising delays to patients.

Diabetes & Endocrinology is a busy department where there is always something new to learn. We can promise you will never be bored!

This is a part-time post working 30.0 hours, some of which can be worked remotely.

Main duties of the job

  1. To provide a complete medical secretarial service, including accurate audio typing for the department, producing clinic letters and other documents
  2. To liaise with nurses, doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team, including inpatient and outpatient booking teams to provide a quality service for the patients
  3. To work as part of a team sharing responsibility for the smooth running of the department
  4. To provide a first point of contact, answering all telephone enquiries, taking and relaying messages in a polite and helpful manner and using own judgement to establish the priority of issues and taking action as appropriate.
  5. To check patients have been listed on patient databases and assist booking clerks as require
  6. To effectively arrange and book follow-up appointments, and monitor the 'To be Scheduled' List.
